HEARTLAND RACEWALKERS SHINE AT SENIOR OLYMPICS

The Heartland Racewalkers, a Mo Valley USATF club based in Overland Park, Kan, recently returned from the national Senior Olympics in Louisville, Ky.

There were two racewalks: 1500 and 5000 meters. Ten members participated and they came away with 3 Gold medals, 4 Silvers, 2 Bronzes and 4 ribbons. The age divisions ranged from 50-54 to 90-94. The two 90-year-old members, Jean Brunnenkant and Tom Young, brought home 2 Golds (Jean) and 2 Silvers (Tom).

This was the best showing yet for the club which has been participating in these biannual events since 1993. Over 12,000 athletes competed in a variety of sports, including over 400 racewalkers.

The club is now also training some youth racewalkers and three of them have recently won medals in a regional competition in Joplin.
