Coach/Manager, USA Track & Field High Performance Center of Excellence

USA Track & Field (USATF) is seeking a coach and manager to oversee the athletes and administer related programs for its High Performance Center of Excellence at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California (CVOTC). The position will oversee all activities related to the successful administration of a track and field program for athletes competing at the World and Olympic level. The coach/manager will fulfill the goals and objectives for Centers of Excellence according to the 2012 USATF High Performance Plan.

This individual will be based at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. Frequent travel, particularly during the spring and summer track and field season, is to be expected. The individual will be a contract employee of USATF, and the position will report to USATF’s Chief of Sport Performance and the onsite supervisor will be the USATF Director of Coaching. The Director of the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center will provide support and oversight for residence and facility issues.

Experience and Qualifications:

  1. Minimum five years experience as a Head Coach of track and field, or work experience which required similar leadership and management skills.
  2.  Recent experience coaching elite track and field athletes, which includes proven success at the international/Olympic level.
  3. Proven expertise coaching at least two event groups within the sport of track & field, such as throws, jumps, sprints, hurdles and distance running/endurance.
  4. USATF Coaching Education school certification at Level II and/or III is preferred.
  5.  Proven ability to manage budgets, facilities, and the day to day tasks required to manage a track and field team.
  6. Ability to integrate appropriate sport science, technology and medical services to enhance athletes’ performance and facilitate their rest, recovery, and rehabilitation.
  7. Experience in conducting track & field competitions, camps, clinics, scientific meetings, educational seminars and conferences.
  8.  Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree is required and a Master’s degree preferred in a field of study related to coaching, sport science or athletic administration.

 Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1.  Develop and conduct long-range training programs, sport science programs and competition strategies for designated elite athletes (able-bodied and Paralympics) in residence at the CVOTC.
  2.  Create a team environment in working with other contract OTC coaches and the athletes’ personal coaches in conjunction with the residence program and designated athlete-centered projects.
  3. Coordinate with sport scientists, medical service providers and other sports training experts to assure a seamless environment in which elite athletes may reach their full potential.
  4. Serve as USATF’s on-site administrator for all programs and budgetary matters, including administrative aspects of the Residence Program.
  5.  Work collaboratively with CVOTC staff on scheduling, facility and logistical issues.
  6. Contribute to USATF High Performance Summits in the areas of one’s expertise as well as in performance and competition strategies.
  7. Collaborate with the USATF’s Sport Science Technical Manager, the USOC’s Performance Services team and the USATF Director of High Performance in conducting sport science studies and hosting camps/clinics at the CVOTC.
  8.  Coordinate and manage on-site competitions as required.
  9.  Serve as the manager of the CVOTC delegation when traveling to competitions and events.

Compensation and Location:

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Employment will be a one year contract and, based upon an annual performance evaluation, may be extended in subsequent years through the end of the 2012 quadrennium.  This individual will be required to work daily at the OTC in Chula Vista.
