National Masters Track & Field Minutes
March 23, 2002
The meeting convened at 5:45 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Center
Officers Present: Chairman George Matthews, Vice Chair Suzy Hess, Secretary Bob Cahners
George Matthews called the Athletes' Meeting to order and introduced himself and the other MTF officers present. He informed athletes that 45 minutes was allotted for the meeting and after that time was up, people who wanted to raise other issues were welcome to do so.
He introduced Roland Ranson, head track and field coach at the University of Maine to give a brief update on the August Outdoor Championships. Roland indicated that everything was in place and the planning was going smoothly with an oversupply of officials. He had entry forms with him and he reminded everyone that the 2002 Outdoor Championships had a website and that all the competitors at the Outdoor Championships would receive an entry form and information about the meet.
Chairman Mathews introduced Phil Byrne the Chair of the Awards Committee. Phil thanked the 18 members of the Awards Committee he also thanked the people who sent in nominations. He indicated that the plan was to speed up the presentation of awards so people wouldn't have to wait until spring. He said to make sure that everyone was able to receive their awards in person, those who were not here for the Indoor Championships award presentation would get another chance to receive their awards in Orono in the Summer. Athletes were urged to contact those winners who were absent and tell them to get in touch with Suzy Hess.
Phil then proceeded to give out the Outstanding Athletes Awards.
Emil Pawlik awarded the Outstanding Multi Events Award to Phil Byrne.
Phil Awarded the Outstanding Administrator Award to George Mathews for his work as Masters Chair during 2001.
The Age Group awards were then presented.
Rod Larsen was introduced to award the race walking awards.
At the end of the awards presentations, Phil Byrne thanked Pete Taylor for his fine work as announcer.
Chairman Mathews pointed out that this was the largest indoor championships so far and congratulated Steve Vaitones and John Thomas for their good work as meet directors. Mathews urged athletes to contact Sandy Pashkin and her Games Committee with comments or problems that they encountered. He introduced Championship Games Committee chair, Sandy Pashkin who introduced her committee consisting of Rex Harvey, Becky Sisely, Dick Hotchkiss and Ed Daniels.
Mathews introduced Steve Vaitones who briefly commented on this year's Indoor Championships.
Rex Harvey was introduced. Rex gave an update on the WMA World Championship Meet in Puerto Rico and said he felt comfortable with the way the plans for the meet were progressing. He also reported on the NCCWMA meet in Leon, Mexico. Sandy Pashkin also reported on the Leon meet and said that no detailed schedule information was available yet. The meet is scheduled for Aug. 22-25. She also said they are welcoming foreign officials.
There is no information yet available on which uniform styles are acceptable in WMA championship meets. It is hoped that Nike will be able to provide uniforms similar to those warn by USATF open athletes.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:15 pm
