Awards and Prize Purse
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) should contact the MLDR Championships Coordinator or the MLDR Race Liaison as soon as possible and no later than 6 months before the event to coordinate with the USATF National Office to prepare the awards order for your event.
Awards will be presented according to USATF Competition Rules. (see below)
USATF individual and team National Championship medals and team plaques (if applicable) are ordered by the Events Department staff of the USATF National Office and the cost is passed on to the LOC.
USATF National Championship patches will be provided by the USATF National Office Events Department at no charge. Patches will be awarded to individual champions only and are no longer awarded to team champions.
The prize purse structure will be established by the MLDR Race Liaison and the MLDR Championships Coordinator after consultation with the LOC and the Event Director and will depend on the total money being offered. See the separate Prize Purse Structure document on the Championship Links Page.
Below is a GENERIC MLDR Championship Awards document:
Masters LDR Championship Awards
USATF National Championship individual medals will be awarded to the top 3 men’s and women’s individual finishers in all 5-year age divisions, from 40-44 to the age group of the oldest finisher.
USATF National Championship individual medals will be awarded to the top 3 Master men’s and women’s overall finishers and the top 3 Master men’s and women’s age-graded finishers.
USATF National Championship team medals (if applicable) will be given to the declared members of the first-, second-, and third-place men’s and women’s teams in each team division: 40+, 50+, 60+, 70+, and 80+.
USATF National Championship Team Plaques (if applicable) will be given to the first-, second-, and third-place men’s and women’s teams in each team division: 40+, 50+, 60+, 70+, and 80+.
USATF National Championship Patches will be awarded to the winners of each 5-year age division, the overall Master men and women’s race winner and to the Master men and women’s age-graded champions.
In Masters LDR Championships, including cross country, masters shall be allowed to win awards in all categories (e.g., overall, age group and age-graded). i.e., “double and triple-dipping” is allowed and encouraged. This information should be passed along to the Timing Services provider for the race results.
The prize purse structure will be established by the MLDR Race Liaison and the MLDR Championships Coordinator after consultation with the LOC and the Event Director and will depend on several factors including; the total money being offered and whether or not there will be team scoring. MLDR guidelines suggest that a minimum of half of the individual prize purse be awarded on an age graded basis. It is also required that the prize purse be divided fairly between men and women.
Please list the time/location of the awards ceremony on the event webpage.
The most common option is to hold an onsite awards ceremony as soon as possible after the race. Note that there is a required one hour protest period. Another option would be a separate post-race party/awards ceremony at a pre-determined location. The LOC and the Event Director should contact the USATF MLDR Championships Coordinator and the MLDR Race Liaison to plan for their awards ceremony.
Any other awards provided by the LOC other than the USATF National Championships awards and prize purse should be cleared through the MLDR Championships Coordinator and MLDR Race Liaison.
Per USATF Competition Rule 5.2 “Other individual prizes, which shall be specified on the entry blank, may be presented as determined by the Championship sponsor subject to the approval of the appropriate sport committee of USATF.”
Care must be taken if the USATF MLDR Championship is part of a larger event.
Per USATF Competition Rule 341.7 “If a Masters Championship is part of a larger event, Championship competitors shall be eligible for awards in their divisions or age groups in the non-championship event.”
If the USATF Masters LDR Championship race starts at the same time as the larger event, then the Championship race runners would also be eligible for any and all awards given out as part of the larger event.
In such cases in the past, USATF MLDR Championship runners have used a separate start wave so that they would not be eligible for the awards from the larger event.
