2012 USATF/IAAF Academy for Sprints and Hurdles

Offering:  USATF/IAAF Academy diploma and certification upon completion of all components of the course.  The IAAF Academy Diploma is the highest recognized achievement awarded through the IAAF Coaches Education and Certification System (CECS). It is recognized around the world and indicates that a coach is not only highly experienced but has the knowledge to coach or instruct at the highest international levels of the track & field profession.

CEU or graduate credit is available upon request from Indiana University.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Coaches living in the United States must have successfully completed the USATF Level 2 Course for Sprints/Hurldes/Relays.
  2. International coaches must have successfully completed the IAAF Coaches Education and Certification System (CECS) Level IV Sprints & Hurdles.
  3. All coaches must be actively coaching track & field.

Canadian Coaches

Canadian coaches must apply through Athletics Canada and submit their applications directly to Donna Harris, Director Coach Development via email at  The application should be sent in the form of an email with attachments.  The application requirements for Canadian coaches are as follows:

  • Certified at Level 3 or Competition Development certified (please provide your CC#)
  • Three to five years experience working with athletes competing at the national level
  • Branch endorsement (Athletics Canada will contact your provincial branch upon receipt of your application)
  • Statement of coaching philosophy and explanation of how concepts presented at this seminar will be shared with others upon your return to your club/school/province
  • A coaching resume outlining coaching assignments, athletes they are currently coaching or have coached and their performances, etc.

Once Athletics Canada reviews the applications and confirms coaching certification, all applications will be sent on to USATF for final selection.  The application deadline for Canadian Coaches is Friday, November 18.

Applications: Applications should be submitted by December 5, 2011 to Terry Crawford, USATF Director of Coaching ( Candidates will be notified of their status within three (3) business days of receiving the application. The USATF/IAAF Academy course is designed to be a small classroom environment with limited enrollment. Qualified applicants will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Limited Enrollment:   A limited number of slots for professionals applying from related fields, USOC NGBs, Strength and Conditioning coaches, Speed Development coaches, etc, will be considered in a non-diploma capacity if space is not filled with qualified coaches. Please submit application per the above instructions. Professionals who do not have the above qualifications are not eligible to receive the IAAF Diploma and will not be notified by December 6th if they have been accepted to attend the academy.

Payment: Payment must be made, by Visa credit card, at the time of application submission. Each card will be run within 72 hours of acceptance. Credit card information will not be stored in any format once transactions are complete or applicant has been denied.

Available Scholarships: USATF is awarding four (4) $1200 scholarships to cover the tuition, room and board cost of the academy. US residents should submit applications for scholarship to Terry Crawford at The USATF Coaches Advisory Committee will review and select scholarship recipients. The IAAF will be sponsoring four (4) $1200 scholarships covering tuition, room and board cost for non-US  resident coaches. Interested coaches should contact Lenford Levy, Director at the IAAF Regional Development Center at

Schedule: A complete daily schedule will be provided at a future date. The Academy will open January 1, 2012, with registration from 3-6pm, followed by dinner. The opening session will begin at 7:15pm. The Academy will end on Saturday, January 7, 2012 with a closing dinner and presentation. Check-out is scheuled for Sunday, January 8, 2012,  by 11:00am.

Transportation: Arrivals at the San Diego Airport may request shuttle service to the Olympic Training Center at the time of their acceptance into the Academy. Parking passes will be provided for Coaches who drive to the Olympic Training Center at no charge.
