2013 USATF/IAAF Academy for Sprints and Hurdles

Offering: Registered coaches will receive a USATF/IAAF Academy diploma and Level 3 certification upon completion of all components of the course. The IAAF Academy Diploma for an Elite Coach is the highest recognized achievement awarded through the IAAF Coaches Education and Certification System (CECS). It is recognized around the world and indicates that a coach is not only highly experienced but has the knowledge to coach or instruct at the highest international levels of the track & field profession. In addition to the IAAF Diploma, all USATF Level 2 coaches who complete the course will receive a Level 3 certification in their selected event.

CEU or graduate credit is available upon request from Indiana University.

  • Ralph Mann - USATF Lead Sport Scientist for biomechanics; Lead sport scientist for IAAF Academy for Sprints/hurdles. Noted lecturer and author on High Performance topics for sprints.
  • Dr. Robert Chapman - USATF Associate Director of Sport Science; Assistant Professor of Kinesiology, Indiana University
  • Loren Seagrave - Lead lecturer for IAAF Academy around the globe, IMG Academy Director for Speed and Movement;  Director of Track and Field Academy at IMG, Bradenton. World Class coach and lecturer. Acclaimed lead instructor for USATF Coaching Education.
  • John Smith - World renowned sprint/hurdle coach, Lead Coach instructor for US-based IAAF Academy. Hurdle/Sprint Laboratory Specialist.
  • Dr. Denise Wood - Former USATF international thrower, specialist in motor learning, member of USATF Coaching Education sport science instructors.
  • IAAF and IMG Sport Scientist - These specialist will instruct on nutrition, mental imaging, sport psychology and strength training.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Coaches living in the United States must have successfully completed the USATF Level 2 Course in sprints/Hurdles.
  2. International coaches must have successfully completed the IAAF Coaches Education and Certification System (CECS) Level IV in sprints/hurdles. They must also secure an endorsement from their National Federation, and have letters of recommendation from the Federation and the IAAF RDC submitted with application. Canadian coaches who have completed the Canada Athletics coach certification of Level 3 in the old NCCP or Competition Development Trained in the New NCCP should submit a letter of recommendation from Donna Harris, Director of Coach Development, Canada Athletics. dharris@athletics.ca
  3. Coaches should have coached athletes at a championship level either interscholastic, college, or professional and will be given priority for acceptance with a timely application.
  4. All coaches must be actively coaching track & field or have a proven record of a minimum of 8 years of coaching experience which must be detailed on their resume.

Applications: Applications should be submitted by Tuesday, October 15, 2013  to Terry Crawford, USATF Director of Coaching (terry.crawford@usatf.org). Candidates will be notified of their status within five (5) business days of receiving the application. The USATF/IAAF Academy course is designed to be a small classroom environment (40 enrollees per event) with limited enrollment.Qualified applicants will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Payment:  Once notified of acceptance an online payment link will be sent to the applicant. Online payment  must be completed within 3 days of acceptance to secure spot in the Academy.  No spot is guaranteed until payment is received.

Schedule: The Academy will open Sunday, December 8, 2012, with registration from 2-4pm. The opening session will begin at 4:30pm. The Academy will end on Saturday, December 14, 2013. Check-out is scheduled for Saturday, December 14, 2013, no later than 2:00pm. The daily schedule will include an inactive format of classroom lecture, practicum experience on the track with world class athletes, and sport science laboratory experience for biomechanical analysis. A detailed schedule will be posted a few weeks prior to the course.

Course Requirements: The IAAF Academy contains 55 hours of contact time in classroom lectures, laboratory practicum, and demonstrations. Three individual projects are required by each student for completion of the course. The course projects are valued at 100 points, and the student must receive a grade of 70 points to pass the course and earn an IAAF Elite coach Diploma and the USATF Level 3 Certification for Sprints and Hurdles.

Student Projects:

  1. Poster built by student with directions from the lecturers to illustrate a disciplinary study for a track and field project. Students may use computer, drawings, etc. Each student will be provided with a 24”X 24” poster sheet. Poster is due the third day of classes. Students should bring their own supplies: markers, crayons, pencils, etc.
  2.  On site, Individual presentation of the outline of a interdisciplinary project to be implemented over the next six months in the student’s home location.
  3. Interdisciplinary project, due August 1, 2014. Project should apply the elements of methodology and pedagogy learned in the Academy lectures and include an interdisciplinary approach in utilizing all high performance resources if applicable to the selected project.

Housing: Due to the demanding schedule of the Academy, all accepted applicants must stay on the IMG Campus. Housing will include three meals a day at the IMG dining hall.

Grants: The USATF Coaches Advisory Committee will award three grants for tuition, room and board.
