2019 National Team Medical Staff Selection Process

Includes criteria for medical staff selection for all 2019 national teams, including the 2020 Olympic Games.

USA Track & Field is accepting applications for national team medical staff positions for all 2019 events and the 2020 Olympic Games.  
The online application and all supplementary materials must be submitted no later than 11:59pm EST November 1, 2018.  Selections will be governed by Regulation 17 of the bylaws of USA Track & Field.  Staff selections and team assignments will be announced once required approvals are obtained by the USATF Board of Directors and (if necessary) the USOC, with an anticipated announcement date for 2019 national teams by the end of January 2019.

application form is specific for national team medical staff service.  Volunteer medical staff for various USATF Championship events are handled by the local organizing committee (LOC) of each event.  Please contact the LOC for the specific event if you are interested in volunteering.
Note that there are general criteria for service for all national team medical staff service, plus additional criteria for the 2020 Olympic Games.   Applicants must meet this criteria to apply for a given event.  Submission of application must include a full and accurate disclosure of the information requested.  False representation of any information will immediately disqualify an individual from the pool of candidates.  Note that on the form (linked below) you may also indicate that you wish your application to be considered for specific teams, as well as placement in the general candidate pool.

CANDIDATES POOL:  The medical staffs for all 2019 events and the 2020 Olympic Games will be selected from the applications received by USATF no later than 11:59pm EST November 1, 2018.  To be considered for inclusion in the pool, all interested persons must submit an online application, regardless of the individual’s past experience or team assignments. 

As part of the online application, you must upload electronic copies / scans of: 

·         Your current professional licenses and certifications (if required in the state where you practice for your profession)

·         Your current CV

·         Proof of certification in CPR/AED (not required for Sport Psychologists)

·         (for some applicants) Letter of recommendation from a sports related professional (coach, athlete, athletic director, sports medicine provider), or letter of recommendation from a USATF national team athlete or coach. (To see if this requirement applies to you, see specific requirements below).

·         A head shot photo.

It is STRONGLY recommended that you get these electronic copies / scans in place before beginning the online submission process, as there is no option to save and update later.  Your application WILL NOT be considered complete without these documents being uploaded with the application. 

·         Be a current member of USA Track & Field. (A membership can be obtained online by clicking here)

·         Submit a completed online application, including all required document uploads, to USATF by 11:59pm EST on 11/1/2018 to be eligible for consideration for selection for a 2019 staff.

·         Possess a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after the conclusion of the event

·         Be available for the entire duration of the event, including training camp (at select events).

·         Be in good health and able to withstand the physical rigors of traveling with and working with the team.

·         Copy of professional license/certification

·         Copy of First Aid (BLS), CPR/AED certified (Not required for Sport Psychologists)

·         Copy of current CV/Resume

·         Successfully pass a medical /criminal background check

·         May never have been convicted of a felony or any conviction for Health Care fraud

·         May not have any disciplinary license actions

·         May not have any actions or sanctions or discipline on clinical privileges or employment as the result of sexual abuse/harassment, or substance abuse

·         USATF must be notified by the volunteer of any pending criminal charges or disciplinary action by any medical organization, board, or licensing agency as soon as they are filed at any time while serving as a USATF medical volunteer

·         Meet specific criteria of the team staff they are applying for

·         Must be willing to sign the International Team Staff Code of Conduct

--For all teams

·         At least three years’ experience in health care specialty

·         Letter of recommendation from sports related professional (coach, athlete, athletic director, sports medicine provider)*

*If you have served on a USATF national team in the past 5 years (calendar years 2014 through 2018), a letter of recommendation is not required.  However, a list of USATF national teams you have served on is required.
--For 2020 Olympic Games

·         All of the above requirements, AND

·         Letter of recommendation from a national team coach or athlete*

·         List of 3 USATF National Team athletes to serve as references.  Note that you do not need to and should not contact them yourself.  USATF staff will contact your listed athletes as a point of reference as needed.

·         Five years’ experience in health care professional specialty

·         Served on national team staff (e.g. World Indoors, Pan Am Juniors, World Juniors, etc.) OR worked as USATF medical staff member/volunteer at USATF national championships

·         Successful completion of USOC Volunteer Medical Program

*If you have served on a USATF national team in the past 5 years (calendar year 2014 through 2018), letter of recommendation is not required.  However, a list of USATF national teams you have served on is required.

Medical Physicians (MD/DO):

·         Copy of valid state medical license in the state they are practicing

·         Copy of current Board Certification

·         Copy of current, valid DEA certificate.

·         May not have any limitations, restrictions, or disciplinary sanctions against their medical licenses or DEA.

·         Strongly recommend: A Certificate of Additional Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine

Chiropractic Physicians:

·         Copy of valid state chiropractic license in the state they are practicing

·         Must also possess and provide copy of at least one of the following credentials:

·         Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP)

·         Diplomate American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physician (DACBSP)

·         Minimum degree requirement of Masters in Sports Science

·         Strongly recommend: Active Release Technique certification or other soft tissue treatment certification/experience

Certified Athletic Trainers:

·         Copy of certification by the Board of Certification (BOC)

·         If residing in a state where athletic trainers are licensed, you must possess a valid state license and must provide a copy of the license

·         Strongly recommend: Experience with soft tissue and manual therapy techniques

Licensed Physical Therapists:

·         Copy of valid license in the state they are practicing

·         Strongly recommend: Sports Certified Specialist credential and experience with soft tissue and manual therapy techniques

Massage Therapists:

·         Copy of massage therapy license (if required in your state)

·         Must have at least 5 years of experience providing care for athletes and/or athletic events

Sport Psychologist:

·         Doctoral degree in sport psychology, education or kinesiology with specific sport psychology training

·         Either psychology licensure (w/ evidence of fulfilling the sport psychology proficiency requirement as stated by APA), AASP certification, or USOC registry membership.

·         Nominated by USATF sport psychology subcommittee
