National Team Coaches Selection Process for 2018-2019 Non-World Major Competitions

USA Track & Field (USATF) is now accepting applications for Head Coach and Assistant Coach positions for the following teams:
2018 Teams
·         2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships – Birmingham, England (March 1 – 4)
·         2018 IAAF World U20 Championships – Tampere, Finland (July 10 – 15)
·         2018 The Meet USA vs. GBR – London, England (July 21)
·         2018 NACAC Senior Championships – Toronto, Canada (August 10 – 12)
2019 Teams
·         2019 Pan Am U20 Championships – Location TBD (July)
·         2019 NACAC U23 Championships – Location and Date TBD
The Men's and Women's Track & Field Executive Committees will be selecting national team staff for the above-referenced teams at the 2017 USATF Annual Meeting. Per USATF's Operating Regulation 17, selected team staff shall be nominated by the Men's and Women's Track & Field Executive Committees for submission to the CEO for screening and to the USATF Board of Directors for final approval.
Individuals wishing to be considered for these national team staff positions should complete the online application no later than October 30, 2017. A link to the application can be found below.
Applicants must meet the criteria as indicated below to apply for national team staff coaching positions.  Please do not apply for a staff position for which you have not met all of the criteria.  Such applications will not be considered.  
The following descriptions are brief summaries of the duties of a Head Coach and an Assistant Coach. Additional responsibilities will be outlined in detail and provided to individuals selected to a team.
Head Coach
The Head Coach will primarily communicate and liaise with the Head Manager, USATF national office staff/Team Leader, Relay Coach and assistant coaches regarding all team matters and will have general oversight of the assistant coaches.
Assistant Coaches
Assistant Coaches will primarily liaise with the personal coaches of the athletes in their event group, assisting the athlete and the athlete’s personal coach with coordination of training logistics. If requested by the athlete, an Assistant Coach may assist with coaching. Additionally, Assistant Coaches will be tasked with ensuring that athletes in their event group are adequately prepared prior to and during competition by communicating any and all pertinent information.

The Head Coach and Assistant Coach staff for the above named teams will be selected from the applications received by USATF no later than October 30, 2017.  To be considered for inclusion in the pool, all interested persons must submit an online application, regardless of the individual’s past experience or team assignments. 
Individuals selected for any one of the 2018 and/or 2019 Non-World coaching staffs must:

  1. Submit a fully completed online application to USATF on or before October 30, 2017. Applicants who have submitted applications in previous years are

eligible but must submit a new application to confirm their interest and provide current contact information. Applications must provide a full and accurate disclosure of any prior experience on USATF national teams. False representation of prior national staff experience will immediately disqualify an individual from consideration.

  1. Be a current member in good standing with USATF, and remain a member for the duration of the period served.
  2. Be a member of the USATF Coaches Registry for the duration of the period served. Additionally, as part of the Coaches Registry requirements, individuals must:
    1. Successfully pass the National Center for Safety Initiatives’ (NCSI) background screen in accordance with the current USATF and, when relevant, USOC Background Screening Policies. (Should a nominee experience any event between the time the background screen is conducted and the relevant Championships/Games that may change his/her background screen status, the nominee must inform USATF).

Because the background screen can take up to two weeks to process, applicants who are not current members of the Coaches Registry should apply immediately so that they will be approved by November 15, 2017.  Visit to begin the application process for the Coaches Registry. USATF will not put forth any name for selection that is not on the USATF Coaches Registry by November 15, 2017.

  1. Complete the SafeSport Course. To complete the course online visit Be sure to use your USATF membership number in your application in order for it to be attached to the Coaches Registry.  Contact Kimberly Sims at if you experience any issues completing the course. 
  2. Be a current collegiate, high school, personal, or club coach.
  3. Possess a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after the conclusion of the competition for which they may be selected.
  4. Be available for the entire duration of the competition, including additional days for any training camp(s) and travel.
  5. Be in good health and able to withstand the physical rigors of traveling with and working with the Team.
  6. Agree to refrain from coaching any international athlete who has the potential of being named to another country’s Team while representing USATF as a national team coach from training camp through the international competition.
  7. Sign the USATF National Team Staff Agreement to Represent.
