Young stars ready to race at USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships


MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina -- More than 3,400 of the best youth athletes ages 8-18 in the United States will compete at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The athletes advanced to the national championships after qualifying through their respective state and regional competitions.

Races will be held at Whispering Pines Golf Course. Each age division will compete over the following distances: 8 and under racing 2 km; 9-10 racing 3 km; 11-12 racing 3 km; 13-14 racing 4 km; 15-16 racing 5 km; and 17-18 racing 5 km.


2014 USARC Champion Christo Landry (Falls Church, Virginia) will attend the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships as a guest of honor. Landry will speak at opening ceremonies, serve as a guest starter for select age-group races and will help distribute awards at the awards ceremony. There will be a meet and greet opportunity with Landry as he will sign autographs from 12-1:30 p.m. Saturday next to the USATF Merchandise tent at the course.

This year's athletes will build upon the 33 years of Junior Olympic history. Past standouts including Amy Yoder Begley, Andrew Wheating and Deena Kastor have emerged as successful distance runners and gone on to represent the United States on the Olympic stage.

Seven returning champions will look to defend their titles in Myrtle Beach, including Caleb Hymans (8 and under boys), Aidyn Woodall (9-10 girls), James Donahue (9-10 boys), Devianna Salcedo (11-12 girls), Erik Gonzalez (13-14 boys), Lauren Jacob (15-16 girls) and Phillip Rocha (15-16 boys).
