Women's shot put update – Aaliyah Pete
A clerical error has resulted in 2014 USA junior runner up Aaliyah Pete being omitted from declarations for the women's shot put at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene, Ore. Team USA staff submitted declarations Thursday morning and the error was realized later Thursday, when start lists were posted. Despite multiple efforts, the omission could not be rectified and Pete was denied entry into today’s competition.
Team USA managers met with Pete and her personal coach, Brian Bedard, Thursday evening to inform them of the error. Women’s team head coach Dana Boone and CEO Max Siegel also have reached out to Pete and Bedard.
"This was a case of human error that resulted in a deserving young woman missing an opportunity to compete on the international stage," Siegel said. "We are speaking with Team staff to determine what happened and have expressed our deepest regrets to Ms. Pete and her coach."
Pete finished second at the 2014 USA Junior Championships with a throw of 16.33m/53 feet, 7 inches, to qualify for the team.
