More than 200 youth are expected to participate in the event that will be held behind the west grandstand at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. Afterwards, youth will spend the day watching the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Current Team USA athletes Kellie Wells
and David Oliver
join USATF Alumni athletes Joanna Hayes
, Gary Morgan
, Dan O’Brien
and Johnny Gray
for the event. They will speak to the youth about Olympism, their experiences in athletics and the benefits of living a healthy, active lifestyle while making good life choices. Commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games, Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness and well-being in addition to Olympic ideals of Fair Play, Perseverance, Respect and Sportsmanship.
From June 17-26, 2011, communities across the United States will celebrate Olympic Day through educational programming and other activities.
Eighteen at-risk youth will receive a special package from the JS & Associates Youth Foundation and Nike that includes a t-shirt, hat and shoes. “There are a lot of athletes out there who are the person they are today as a result of the sport of track and field,” said Gray, American record holder in the 800 meters and founder of JS & Associates Youth Foundation. “We can thank the sport for our education, our careers and the invaluable lessons we have learned about life along the way. I believe it is our turn to give back and help the youth of today realize their passions, reach for their dreams and share some amazing experiences with some of America’s finest athletes.”
The JS & Associates Youth Foundation promotes positive life choices by advocating for underprivileged children.
The USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are June 23-26 in Eugene, Ore.
