USATF presents the 2014 Robert Giegengack Award to the late Kim Haines


ANAHEIM -- The late Kim Haines, beloved youth track & field advocate and former USATF board member, is the 2014 recipient of the Robert Giegengack Award. The Robert Giegengack Award is USATF’s highest honor for contributions to Athletics through volunteerism.

The award was presented to Zelda, Kim’s widow, Thursday at the 2014 Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at USATF’s Annual Meeting in Anaheim. Haines passed away in February 2013 at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer.

Haines was inducted into the Montana Coaches Hall of Fame and Northern Montana College’s Athletic Hall of Fame in his lifetime. He was past President of the Montana Association, Chairman of Youth Multi-Events, Chairman of USATF Youth Athletics, Master Certified Track Official, and served many years on the Board of Directors. Haines was also a former Frank Sevigne Award recipient and a President’s Award winner.

Spending 37 years as an educator and coach, Haines was also actively involved in the development and organization of track and field across Montana and the nation. Taking his Western Montana Track Club (made up of his talented family and other talented youth across the state) to many National meets, he created many wonderful memories. In 1999, he organized and accompanied a USATF Youth team to its the first international competition in Poland, and the second in Hungary. Besides presenting seminars and programs for the Native American Sports Counsel on reservations, he assisted in obtaining a grant from Johnson & Johnson to develop programs on the reservations and inner-cities. He was a moving force in youth track and field.

The Robert Giegengack Award was established in 1982 in recognition of the late Yale University track & field coach's "superior and outstanding contributions to the sport and to the organization as an official, coach, and administrator." It is awarded by the Board of Directors to a person who excels in contributing to the excellence and high standards of the sport of Athletics. The Robert Giegengack Award is USA Track & Field's highest accolade for contributions to Athletics in any category of volunteer work.
