USATF mourns loss of celebrated sports writer Frank Litsky

Frank Litsky, renowned sports reporter and track and field expert passed away at the age of 92 on Tuesday, October 30, 2018.

Litsky, a 1946 graduate of the University of Connecticut, joined The New York Times in 1958 after stints at United Press International in Hartford and New York City. Litsky began as a copy editor at The Times specializing in Olympic sports, then became a sports writer, covering the New York Jets from 1965 to 1967, Joe Namath's first three years. From 1968 to 1973, Litsky served as Assistant to the Sports Editor in charge of the daily paper, then became Senior Assistant Sports Editor and Sunday Editor from 1973 to 1979.

Litsky has covered track since 1964. He had been a member of the New York Track Writers Association for more than 50 years, and had been the organization's president since 1969 until he retired in 2009.

In 2013, New York Road Runners (NYRR) awarded Litsky the George Hirsch Journalism Award for his outstanding reporting of marathon and long-distance running. In 2006, Litsky was named the inaugural Stan Saplin Award winner, an award presented annually to a journalist, public relations professional, executive, filmmaker or broadcaster who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of the sport of track and field.

Over the years, Litsky had more than 6,000 bylines at The New York Times, with the first in 1959 and the most recent in July 2018.

He was Vice President and secretary of the Sports Broadcasters Association during the 1950s and 1960s in addition to being a television analyst for indoor track meets for Home Box Office, Madison Square Garden Network, USA Network and PBS. In 1987, he was a track and field analyst when ESPN re-created the 1984 Olympics and in 1997 became the first newspaper journalist inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s media wing.
