USATF mourns loss of George Kleeman

George Kleeman, stalwart USATF official and one of the nation’s most revered experts on technical track & field rules and competitions passed away Sunday morning, April 22, in Martinez, California one week after suffering a major heart attack. He was 78.

Many recognize Kleeman’s numerous contributions to national and association events and committees over the past three decades, but he was also an accomplished distance runner in the 1960-70’s having run more than 20 marathons and three Ultras. He won the USA-AAU 50 Mile Championships in 1979, earning a spot on Team USATF to compete at the 1979 London-to-Brighton Ultra Run.

Kleeman earned his Ph.D, in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota-Twin Falls. As an engineer for Shell, Kleeman help build refineries around the country which brought him to the USATF Gulf, West Virginia and finally, Pacific associations where he built the Shell Martinez refinery before retiring in 1999.

While in Houston at the USATF Gulf Association, Kleeman was instrumental in the further development of the Houston Marathon as meet director for many years.

Born December 22, 1940, Kleeman is survived by one niece.
