USATF alumni join retired NBA and WNBA stars for Celebrity Basketball Game to benefit Atlanta elementary and high school students

INDIANAPOLIS -- Retired Team USATF Olympians and famed basketball players will come together in a celebrity all-star basketball game and back-to-school giveaway to benefit over 1,500 students on Saturday, July 15 in Atlanta, followed by AAAG Sports Festival on Sunday, USATF announced Tuesday.

The event, Education: A Living Legacy, will feature legendary track and field Olympians such as 1968 Olympic gold medalist and USATF Hall of Famer John Carlos, 2004 Olympic gold medalist and four-time World Champion Dwight Phillips, 1992 Olympic bronze medalist Janeene Vickers, 1988 Olympic gold medalist Dannette Young, 1968 Olympic gold medalist Mel Pender, and more.

In addition to the legends, there will be a special appearance by Kristi Castlin, 2016 Olympic 100-meter hurdles bronze medalist and Atlanta native.

The multi-generational group of track all-stars is joining forces to promote education in the community with retired NBA, WNBA and overseas players, including two-time Olympic gold medalist, two-time World Champion, Atlanta Dreams’ all-time leading scorer and current athlete Angel McCoughtry. McCoughtry will boast teammates in former Atlanta Hawks guard Drew Barry, two-time Paralympic gold medalist Stephanie Dunn, 17-year veteran and two-time SEC Player of the Year Dale Ellis, and more.

“Encouraging our youth is at the core of USATF’s mission to grow the sport,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “It’s a privilege to connect the next generation of great athletes with those who helped pave the way for their success. We’re grateful to all the organizations involved for the opportunity to collaborate in such a beneficial way for the Atlanta community.”

Coordinating organizations include National Basketball Retired Players Association – Atlanta Chapter, African American Association of America – Georgia (AAAG), USATF Georgia Association, and Top of the Key. This first-ever alliance is the result of USATF Alumni’s dedication to uniting retired USATF athletes with meaningful opportunities to inspire positive change.

In addition to the basketball game, athletes will help stuff backpacks for over 1500 students and participate in a pre-game educational fair. USATF alumni will also hand out awards at the AAAG Sports Festival Track & Field Meet the following day.

The educational fair begins at 1:00 p.m. at Pebblebrook High School, followed immediately by the basketball game at 3:30 p.m. Athletes will be available for autographs and handing out backpacks starting at 6:00 p.m.
