USATF Unveils Moscow Collection

7/23/2013

INDIANAPOLIS – The flag of hammer & sickle flew atop the Kremlin as Leonid Brezhnev’s scowl loomed over Eastern Europe. The Iranian hostage crisis raged, the Soviets occupied Afghanistan, Mount St. Helens erupted and John Lennon was murdered.

And throughout the United States, American athletes trained and competed for an Olympic Team that would never travel to Moscow for the 1980 Olympic Games.

Some of the greatest athletes in USA Track & Field history, including Renaldo Nehemiah, Carl Lewis, Steve Scott, Francie Larrieu-Smith, Maren Seidler, Alberto Salazar, Chandra Cheeseborough, - and world record holders and future USATF board members Willie Banks and Stephanie Hightower - made the 1980 Olympic team for Moscow. But even before the Olympic Trials were contested, President Jimmy Carter had announced a U.S. boycott of the Games, citing the invasion of Afghanistan.

Some athletes got the opportunity to avenge their disappointment in subsequent Games. Others had to be satisfied – or dissatisfied – with a White House ceremony.

Announcing the Moscow Collection

As Team USA prepares to return to Moscow for the 2013 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in August, USATF unveils its signature merchandise line for 2013, the Moscow Collection.

Honoring the 1980 Olympic Team that was denied the opportunity to compete in the boycotted Moscow Games, USATF’s Moscow Collection includes custom-made items that combine retro chic with the modern flair of premium fashion and athletic lines.

Imagery that calls to mind Cold-War symbolism, the race for athletic supremacy and the vivid colors of the era are on display in a line that ranges from casual tops to competitive gear. Many products are USATF-exclusive Nike produced performance wear and include USATF-original designs.

“This collection embodies the evolution of our merchandise efforts over the last 10 years,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “With the Moscow Collection, we offer premium items, original designs, and just as importantly, a tribute to one of the greatest teams in our history. We are proud to offer the Moscow collection in 2013 and plan to continue to expand our unique product offerings at a range of price points.”

Products include a t-shirt with the official Olympic logo, retro team uniform pieces, a 1980-inspired team “shield” and a USATF- designed eagle gracing a premium Nike cotton Dri-fit, soft tee.
