EUGENE, Oregon -- The USATF Junior Outdoor Championships come to historic Hayward Field, July 5-6, as top performers under the age of 20, including college freshman and high school standouts, look to become a part of the U.S. team returning to Eugene in a couple short weeks for the IAAF World Junior Championships, July 22-27.
The meet will be live-streamed on USATF.tv
beginning at 5:50 p.m. ET/2:50 p.m. PT Saturday and 5:45 p.m. ET/2:45 p.m. PT Sunday.
(St. Petersburg, Florida) will be top of mind since becoming the first junior athlete to run faster than 10 seconds in the 100 meters. Early in the outdoor season, he clocked 10.02 in heats at Texas Relays before knocking his time down to 10.01 in the finals that weekend. With a bit of Hayward magic behind him, Bromell ultimately broke the world junior record when he ran 9.97 at NCAA Outdoor Championships in June to win the national crown.
On the women’s side, Mary Cain
(Bronxville, New York) and Kendell Williams
(Marietta, Georgia) will draw much attention as two of the top, young female competitors.
The 18-year-old Cain owns the world junior indoor 1,000m record, which she set in 2:39.25 near the start of the year. Cain’s 4:07.05 in the 1500m at USA Indoors earned her an indoor national title, and she finished runner-up for a second straight year in the outdoor 1,500m with her time of 4:06.34.
Williams, who decided not to compete in the junior combined events at USATF Outdoors despite having a tremendous collegiate season, has won indoor and outdoor national multi-event titles as a freshman at the University of Georgia and swept USTFCCCA Field Athlete of the Year for the entire 2014 season. She is the World Junior and collegiate record holder in the women's indoor pentathlon and the American junior record holder for the women's outdoor heptathlon. At USATF Juniors, she will focus solely on the 100m hurdles.
The 2014 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships serve as the trials for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships. The top two performers in each event, given they have the qualifying standard
, will be afforded the chance to be part of the American team that has the unique opportunity of competing at Worlds on the same track. The 2014 edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships marks the first time the event has ever been held in the United States.
The USATF Junior Outdoor Combined Events were held in conjunction with the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California on Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26.
