USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track And Field Championships Day One Recap

Sacramento, CA -- The 2019 USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships got underway with 15 athletes crowned USATF national champions on day one at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University. Competition continues Tuesday through Sunday and will be broadcast live on USATF.TV+. The broadcast will begin each day at 8:00am PT with the first scheduled running event.

Berlyn Schultz (Lincoln Community TC) won the first gold medal of the games with her effort in the girl’s 15-16 2000m steeplechase. Schultz got out to a strong start and was able to hold off the competition to run 7:06.24. Closing in behind the champion was Ellaney Matarese (Pacific Coast Shockwaves) with a time of 7:13.80. 


Less than 100 points determined the winner of the girl’s 13-14 pentathlon. Ana-Liese Torian (Warrior Athletic TC) was able to hold on to the gold, scoring 3,125 points. Torian won the 100m hurdles in 14.56 for 901 points, placed second in the long jump for 606 points and jumped 1.50m/4-11 in the high jump for third. Kayleigh Stargell (Full Throttle Elite) was in a close second until she placed 16th in the shot put. Stargell tried to make up the difference in the 800m but came up 63 points short with 3,062 points.


It was a close race in the men’s 17-18 2000m steeplechase as Carter Schorr (Unattached) had a strong 68-second final lap to bring him from fourth place at the bell to first place at the finish line with a 6:13.49. Joshua Beam (Unattached), Nicholas Wilson (Center Grove Track & XC Club) and David Stapleton (Unattached) all finished within four tenths of each other. Beam placed second in 6:16.04, Wilson with 6:16.22 and Stapleton in 6:16.48.


Miles Roberts (Umoja) won the boy’s 13-14 pentathlon with 3,039 points. Roberts had dominant performances in the 100m hurdles and high jump, ran 13.89 in the hurdles for 989 points and cleared 1.80m/5-10 for 627 points. 


Logan Coles (Ocean State Hammerheads) fouled on three attempts but held off the rest of the competition to win the men’s 17-18 hammer throw with a throw 66.83m/219-3 on his second attempt. Kaden Johnson (Unattached) almost took the gold from Coles on his final attempt, with a throw of 65.42m/214-7. 


In the girl’s 13-14 3000m race walk, Reese Gentry (Unattached) dominated the field with a 50-second lead on second place. Gentry crossed the finish line in 15:22.38 to win the title. Talia Green (Oakland Cubs) and Madison Morgan (Katy Express TC) had a battle for second place that ended in a photo finish. Green prevailed, taking second with 16:14.48 and Morgan finished third in 16:14.50. 


Olivia Campbell (Unattached) won the girl’s 15-16 hammer throw on her final attempt of the prelims. After fouling her second attempt, Campbell threw 45.09m/147-11 to sustain her lead throughout the final to win gold.
