USATF Distance Classic features marquee matchups, Olympic headliners

LOS ANGELES -- Rio Olympic medalists Matthew Centrowitz, Jenny Simpson and Great Britain’s Mo Farah headline stacked fields set for Thursday at the 2017 USATF Distance Classic at Jack Kemp Stadium on the campus of Occidental College. Gates open at 5 p.m. PT with coverage starting on NBC Sports Gold (U.S.) and RunnerSpace (international) at 6 p.m. PT. Tickets are available at the gate for $10 for adults and $5 for students and USATF members.


Training partners Centrowitz and Farah will battle head-to-head in the men’s 1500m, joined in their section by fellow Olympians Hassan Mead and Andrew Wheating. Also competing in sections of the men’s 1500m are 2012 Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano, U.S. high school record holder Drew Hunter, and middle distance stars Pat Casey, Mac Fleet, Eric Jenkins and Riley Masters.


Simpson will take to the track in the women’s 800m, joined in her section by fellow Rio Olympians Brenda Martinez and Great Britain’s Lynsey Sharp.


Competing in the women’s 1500m is American record holder Shannon Rowbury, who will be joined in the final section by fellow Olympian Kim Conley. Also entered in the women’s 1500m is Canadian Olympian Andrea Seccafien, last year’s champion in the event, and Kenyan Olympian Violah Lagat, as well as 2014 USATF Indoor champion Gabriele Grunewald, 2017 IAAF World Relays 4x800m gold medalist Laura Roesler and IAAF World Youth bronze medalist Alexa Efraimson.


Leading the way in the men’s 800m are Rio Olympians Charles Jock and Peru’s David Torrence, as well as IAAF World Relays 4x800m gold medalist Brannon Kidder and Texas A&M phenom Donavan Brazier, who is in his first season as a pro.


Rio Olympians and training partners Hillary Bor and Shadrack Kipchirchir lead the steeplechase and men’s 5000m fields Thursday, while recent USATF Half Marathon champion Natosha Rogers takes to the track in the women’s 5000m for her first outdoor race of 2017.
