USATF 50 Mile Trail Champs set for June 4 in Ithaca, New York

6/3/2016

When USATF 50 Mile Trail Championships take place Saturday, June 4 in Ithaca, New York, athletes will toe the line for their final opportunity to qualify for the U.S. team competing at IAU World Trail Championships in Geres, Portugal, in October.

Saturday’s event will be held in conjunction with the Cayuga Trails 50, which marks the course’s third consecutive year and 15th overall as the USATF 50 Mile Championships host.

The 2015 victor, Mario Mendoza will not be returning to defend his title despite a top-3 finish at Lake Sonoma 50 Miler this year. Instead, the 30-year-old Bend, Oregon, resident is focused on the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships in Slovenia on June 18, and has already been named a member of that U.S. team.

Top competitors on the men’s side include Zach Ornelas, Jared Burdick, Dylan Bowman, Tyler Sigl, Matt Flaherty and Jan Welford. Ben Nephew, a top Masters athlete, could also be a contender for a podium spot.

The women’s field features Caitlin Smith, Laura Kline, Sabrina Little, Heather Hoechst, Corrine Malcolm and Karen Holland. However, defending champion Amanda Basham is not expected to race.

Masters women have the greatest number of entrants in the 40-44 category with women’s Masters champions being awarded up to the 55-59 category. Masters men are registered in every age group up to 65-69.

In addition to the top-10 men and women receiving USATF medals, the top three in each masters age category for men and women will also be recognized, starting at 40-44 in five-year increments. The prize purse is $7,000 distributed equally between men and women with the breakdown of $1,500 for first, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. The top masters male and female will each earn $500.

Athletes who have already earned spots to represent the red, white and blue at IAU World Trail Championships are Alex Nichols and Caitlin Smith for their top finishes at the 2015 IAU World Championships. Zach Miller and Megan Kimmel made the team after wins at the North Face 50 Miler in December 2015, and Jim Walmsley and YiOu Wang won the Lake Sonoma 50 in April to secure their sports to compete in Portugal on October 29..
