USA Track & Field Remembers the Legacy of W. Murray Sanford

INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field mourns the loss of W. Murray Sanford, an inaugural inductee to the USATF Officials Hall of Fame. Murray passed away Saturday, Nov. 9 after an extended illness.
As a vital member of the track & field community in Georgia, Sanford formerly served as president of both USATF Georgia and the Atlanta Track Club. He was honored by the USATF National Officials Committee in 1999 and was the Officials Chair in 2003. He was honored by USATF Georgia with the President’s Award in 2013.
Sanford was a beloved history teacher and a track & field and cross country coach at multiple high schools, including Greenwood and Greenville in Mississippi, and Pebblebrook and Lassiter High Schools in Georgia. He also served his country as a US Marine Corps Reservist.
Sanford also received the Andy Bakjian Outstanding Official Award in 2005, the highest honor a USATF Certified Official may receive. The Bakjian Award is presented to those who have contributed far beyond the normal range of activities expected of an official and have made major contributions to track and field.
Sanford worked with the Dekalb International Training Center and was one of its representatives to meetings in Tunis, Mali, Dominican Republic, Morocco and China. He attended the Olympic Games in Montreal, Moscow, Atlanta and Beijing and was present at workshops in New Zealand and England.
