On strategy for the marathon

“You have to be within yourself that whole time. In Beijing, I was too active early on in the race and burned through my match. There might be some points, if it’s too warm, I have to listen to my body and how I’m feeling, use sensory data. It’s a long race, it’s 42 km. What your position is at 20 km can change drastically. In Moscow (at the World Championships), I dropped 20 places in the final 15 km, so you have to watch the others but trust your instincts, too.”


Dathan Ritzenhein

On training for Trials while being injured

“You just think you can do more and should do more. I realized that I needed to do a little less to be healthy. Dan will tell me do 80% of what you were going to do. So if you were going to do 10 km of intervals, do 8 km. If it’s going to be a 26-mile run, back it down to 23. That’s the kind of stuff that intuitively I know and if you were a coach looking at someone’s training you know, but as an athlete doing it yourself, you always think you can do more. If you don’t have that, you’re not going to be successful.”

“It’s been an amazing homecoming. Some of my shakeout runs I did on my old high school course trails. So just the smell and the air, it just brings me back. It’s been really exciting and kind of emotional too. This is where it all started for me when I was little in age-group track in the Valley when I was five. I remember when it was the 1984 Olympics and the nostalgia here, so that’s really exciting.”

On training with a new coach so close to the Trials

“There have been times in this build-up where he’s had to cut me right there and in the moment, it’s really tough because you want to finish the workout and get the final exclamation point on the day. But immediately, even two seconds later, I know it’s the right decision. I’m not going to leave my race in practice here. Workouts are always getting adjusted if they need to be. It’s been good and I definitely didn’t leave my race in any of my practices.”


Scott Smith

On his chances on Saturday

“I think I have a chance because I think you have to have an inflated view of yourself. I’ve only run 2:14. It’s possibly arrogant of me otherwise you won’t make it. Training with Matt (Llano), who is a 2:12 guy, the more variables there are in a race, the more someone with lesser credentials can make it because it’s going to take the best race of my life to make the team. And it’s going to take some people probably not having the best race of their lives. And you don’t want to wish that on anyone, to run poorly. I don’t know that I ever wanted to become a marathoner out of college. I finished third in 2014 at the USATF Marathon Championships and I didn’t run very well in 2015 here in LA. Running in Beijing at the World Championships, it was tough to gauge where my fitness was at.”
