7/9/2019

Santee, California --  The nation’s best male race walkers return to Santee, California on January 25, 2020 for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - 50K Race Walk where the top-3 three highest placing finishers, who also have achieved the 3:50:00 Olympic qualifying standard during the prescribed period, will be nominated to represent Team USA at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, held July 24-August 9, 2020.

“Santee has proven to be an excellent host to the Olympic Trials — Men’s 50 km Race Walk..  We look forward to an exciting event again for our athletes,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel.

This is the third consecutive time Santee has hosted the trials and the ninth time since 2009 that either the USATF National 50km Race Walk Championships or the Olympic Trials have been held in the city. The 1.25k loop course is on Riverview Parkway and Town Center Parkway adjacent to the Mall at Trolley Square at Santee Town Center, with the start / finish on Town Center Parkway behind the Mall. It is the same course as the 2017 and 2018 USATF Race Walk Championships.

“We love the Race Walk! And we love Race Walkers. We are so proud to showcase these amazing athletes, who fly under the radar, but as athletes that compete for over 4 hours over 31.1 miles, they are among the toughest and most uniquely talented athletes that there are in all of sports,” said Santee Mayor John Minto.

In 2016, three-time Olympian John Nunn defended his national title and claimed consecutive first-place finishes at U.S. Olympic Team Trials - 50 km Race Walk, breaking the tape in 4:03:21 to make his third U.S. Olympic Team.

Nunn and 24-year-old Nick Christie walked shoulder to shoulder for 28 laps. Coming into Lap 29, Christie took a five-second lead before Nunn came surging back on Lap 30 to gain a nearly nine-second advantage that never wavered.

Nunn held strong, finishing his final lap at 7:30-mile pace for his championship victory in 4:03:21. Christie finished in second place in 4:22:31 and Michael Mannozzi placed third in 4:31:37.
