True takes home USATF Athlete of the Week following American record at B.A.A. 5K

4/19/2017

INDIANAPOLIS -- American record holder Ben True had a sweet Saturday at the B.A.A. 5K in Boston, lowering his own American road record in the 5 km and winning his fourth title at the event on April 15, kicking off the Boston Marathon weekend.

True (North Yarmouth, Maine) battled against Kenya’s Stephen Sambu, gaining the lead in the final straightaway. True charged hard toward the finish, crossing two seconds faster than his previous national record to win in 13:20. True regained his title after finishing as the runner-up at the 2016 B.A.A. 5k to Ethiopia’s Dejen Gebremeskel.

Other notable performances:

  • Rio Olympic bronze medalist Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) ran a world-leading 1:43.60 in the 800 at the Mt. SAC Relays, the fastest time ever by an American in the month of April.
  • Raevyn Rogers (Houston, Texas) of the University of Oregon set a collegiate record in the women’s 800m with her 1:59.10 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California.
  • Olympian Deajah Stevens (Westchester, New York) of the University of Oregon ran the fastest times of the year by an American in the 100m (11.00) and 200m (22.31), and helped Oregon to a stunning 42.12 collegiate record in the 4x100m at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California.
