Tori Franklin sets American record to win USATF Athlete of the Week

5/17/2018

Tori Franklin (Oak Park, Illinois) set an American record in the women’s triple jump at the Meeting International d’Athl├ętisme de Guadeloupe to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Franklin, the reigning USATF indoor champion, added five inches to Keturah Orji’s existing AR with a 14.84m/48-8.25 effort in the second round at Baie-Mahault Stadium. She opened the competition with a lifetime-best 14.54m/47-8.5 before her record jump, and she added a 14.78m/48-6 in the third round that also surpassed Orji’s mark. In all, her series had five of the top seven jumps in U.S. history.

Other notable performances from the weekend:

Grant Holloway — Holloway won the 110m hurdles with the second-fastest time in collegiate history at 13.15, and also won the long jump with a wind-aided 8.32m/27-3.75 to lead Florida to the men’s team title at the SEC Championships.

Aliphine Tuliamuk — Tuliamuk won the USATF 25K Championships at Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1:25:34 to take over the lead in the USATF Running Circuit standings. She won the half marathon title last week in Pittsburgh.

Sam Chelanga — Chelanga was the men’s winner at the USATF 25K Championships, crossing the line in 1:14:52.

Sydney McLaughlin — The Kentucky freshman phenom bettered the world junior record in the 400m hurdles with a 52.75 at the SEC Championships to move to equal ninth on the world all-time list.

Katelyn Tuohy — Tuohy set a national high school outdoor record in the girls’ 3,200m at the Loucks Games with a 9:47.88.

Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
