Tori Franklin sets American record to win USATF Athlete of the Week


Tori Franklin (Oak Park, Illinois) set an American record in the women’s triple jump at the Meeting International d’Athl├ętisme de Guadeloupe to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Franklin, the reigning USATF indoor champion, added five inches to Keturah Orji’s existing AR with a 14.84m/48-8.25 effort in the second round at Baie-Mahault Stadium. She opened the competition with a lifetime-best 14.54m/47-8.5 before her record jump, and she added a 14.78m/48-6 in the third round that also surpassed Orji’s mark. In all, her series had five of the top seven jumps in U.S. history.


Other notable performances from the weekend:

Grant Holloway — Holloway won the 110m hurdles with the second-fastest time in collegiate history at 13.15, and also won the long jump with a wind-aided 8.32m/27-3.75 to lead Florida to the men’s team title at the SEC Championships.

Aliphine Tuliamuk — Tuliamuk won the USATF 25K Championships at Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1:25:34 to take over the lead in the USATF Running Circuit standings. She won the half marathon title last week in Pittsburgh.

Sam Chelanga — Chelanga was the men’s winner at the USATF 25K Championships, crossing the line in 1:14:52.

Sydney McLaughlin — The Kentucky freshman phenom bettered the world junior record in the 400m hurdles with a 52.75 at the SEC Championships to move to equal ninth on the world all-time list.

Katelyn Tuohy — Tuohy set a national high school outdoor record in the girls’ 3,200m at the Loucks Games with a 9:47.88.

Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
