9/13/2014

MARRAKECH, Morocco -- Three U.S. athletes won individual titles and Team Americas took the 4x100-meter relays on the first day of the IAAF Continental Cup Saturday.

Gia Lewis-Smallwood continued her phenomenal 2014 season, winning the women’s discus with a throw of 64.55m/211-9 to take the competition. She held off a final throw of 62.08m/203-8 from Sandra Perkovic, the Diamond League champion, to win the Continental Cup title. In doing so, Lewis-Smallwood scored eight points for Team Americas.

Francena McCorory won the women’s 400m title, capping a tremendous 2014. McCorory crossed in 49.94 to take the crown, scoring a crucial eight points as Team Europe had taken a substantial lead halfway through the day’s events. She held off Novlene Williams-Mills at the finish, who closed in 50.08.

LaShawn Merritt continued his strong showing throughout the 2014 season, winning the men’s 400 meters in 44.60. Merritt has been nearly unstoppable throughout the 2014 campaign, and the field had no answer for Merritt, as he won by over two-tenths of a second Saturday.

The men’s and women’s 4x100-meter relays scored much-needed points Saturday, as Tianna Bartoletta and Mike Rodgers contributed to big wins for Team Americas. The women, with Bartoletta handling opening leg duties, held off Team Europe to win in 42.44, taking the title and closing the point gap in the overall standings. Mike Rodgers ran the second leg on the 4x1 for Team Americas, as the relay finished in 37.97 to take the title and eight points.

Competition continues Sunday as Team USA and Americas veteran Bernard Lagat takes to the track. Lagat is the only defending champion from Team Americas.
