USC freshman Twanisha Terry wins USATF Athlete of the Week

Twanisha Terry (Miami, Florida) ran the second-fastest women’s 100 meters ever by a U.S. junior athlete to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Terry, a USC freshman who had a prep best of 11.37 for Miami’s Northwestern High School, won the Mt. SAC Relays with a 10.99 clocking, only .01 off Candace Hill’s American junior record, set in 2015. Terry’s time makes her the fourth-fastest junior performer in world history, behind a pair of East Germans and Hill. She also anchored the Women of Troy to a 42.57 win in the 4x100m relay, moving USC to the No. 6 spot on the all-time collegiate list.

Other notable performances from the weekend:

Michael Norman — The World Indoor record holder in the 400m zipped to a U.S.-leading 44.53 in his outdoor season debut for one lap to win at Mt. SAC.

Ronnie Baker — A World Indoors 60m bronze medalist in March, Baker ran a world-leading 9.97 in the 100m to win the Mt. SAC title.

Raven Saunders — In her first competition since the World Championships at London last year, Saunders blasted a world-leading 19.56m/64-2.25 in the shot put at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Alabama.

Kirsten O’Hara-Leetch — O’Hara-Leetch set a U.S. women’s 50-54 age group record in the 10,000m at Mt. SAC, clocking 37:04.87 to slice more than seven seconds off the existing record.

Keturah Orji — Orji, the American record holder from Georgia, won the Mt. SAC Relays women’s triple jump with a 14.33m/48-0.25 leap that was the third-best in collegiate history behind only two of her own efforts.
