Team USATF staff selected for 2018 NACAC Senior Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Coaches LaTanya Sheffield and Maurice Pierce will lead Team USATF at the NACAC Senior Championships August 10-12 in Toronto, Canada


LaTanya Sheffield, Women’s Head Coach: LaTanya Sheffield is in her sixth year as the sprints and hurdles coach at Long Beach State University. Prior to Long Beach, the El Cajon, California native coached at Canyon del Oro High School and POPs Track Club in Tucson, Arizona. In 2016 Sheffield served as the U.S. sprints and hurdles coach for the Rio Olympics. In addition, Sheffield has served as a sprints and hurdles coach at the 2007 Pan American Games, the 2008 World Indoor Championships, and the 2011 Pan American Games. Before Sheffield began coaching she competed at the 1988 Olympic games in the 400m hurdles after setting an American record of 54.66 in the same event in 1985.


Sheffield has served as an event chair for the USA Track and Field Development Committee since 2007. Over the years she has received numerous awards including the 2010 USATF Youth Division Presidents Award, the 2010 Sam Lacy Sports Pioneer Award, and the 2008 NAACP Community Service Recognition Award. Aside from coaching, Sheffield founded Sports Extravaganza, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting childhood obesity.


Maurice Pierce, Men’s Head Coach: Newport News, Virginia native Maurice Pierce is in his 23rd year of coaching track and field and his 15th season with the Hampton University Track and Field and Cross Country programs. After a ten-year stint as the head coach for the Lady Pirates at Hampton University, Pierce took over as the Director of Track and Field and Cross Country. Pierce’s coaching career began with a volunteer assistant position at Norfolk State in 1995 after graduating from the same university. In 1998 he moved on to coach at Maryland Eastern Shore before moving to Hampton University.


Pierce has served as the head coach for Team USATF at NACAC in 2014 in British Columbia as well as an assistant coach for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing in 2015. In addition, Pierce coached David Payne to his 2008 Beijing Olympics 110m hurdles silver medal and serves as a Chair of the USATF Virginia Association Women Elite Athletes.
