Team USATF staff selected for 2018 Athletics World Cup, Thorpe Cup


INDIANAPOLIS — USATF heads into summer championships season with sights on selecting teams for July senior international competitions Athletics World Cup and Thorpe Cup.


Athletics World Cup: July 14-15, 2018 - London

Coaches Linda Lanker and Lynn Smith will lead Team USATF in the Athletics World Cup, July 14-15, in London, England.


This year will mark the first ever Athletics World Cup, to be hosted in London. Eight countries will come together to showcase their track and field skills against the best in the world. Only one male and one female will be allowed in each event, and all IAAF-recognized events up to the 1500m will be contested. USATF athletes will be selected based on 2018 USATF Outdoors results.


Linda Lanker, Women’s Head Coach: Linda Lanker is entering into her 40th year coaching track and field. Lanker is in her third year as an assistant hurdles coach for Coeur d’Alene High School’s track and field team following a six-year head coaching stint at the high school. She has also been coaching the hurdles at Spokane Community College for 19 years. She served as the sprints and hurdles coach for the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships in China as well as the 2010 NACAC Championships in Miami, Florida. More recently Lanker served as the head coach for the 2017 women’s Pan American Junior champion team, which won 28 collective medals in Trujillo, Peru. In 2007 she founded the Runners Soul Track and Field Clinic in Cheney, Washington. Lanker was awarded a 2016 USATF President’s Award from Stephanie Hightower and inducted into the Washington State Coaches Hall of Fame in 2017.


Lynn Smith, Men’s Head Coach: Dayton, Ohio native Lynn Smith has been named the Team USATF men’s head coach for the Athletics World Cup. Smith got his start in coaching as a volunteer for the Central State University track team in Dayton. He has successfully coached two multi-event athletes to the Olympics, including 2008 silver medalist Hyleas Fountain. Previously, he was the women’s head coach for the 2013 Pan American combined events team. He was also an assistant coach for the 2010 United States World Junior Team.

Thorpe Cup: July 27-28, 2018 - Knoxville, Tennessee

Coaches Kip Janvrin and Chris Richardson will lead Team USATF at the 25th annual Thorpe Cup, to be contested July 27-28 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Fans will be able to watch Thorpe Cup on USATF.TV.


The Thorpe Cup is an international track and field competition between USA and Germany. Teams are composed of up to seven men and seven women who compete in the decathlon and heptathlon. USATF athletes will be selected based on 2018 USATF Outdoors results.


Kip Janvrin, Men’s Head Coach: A decathlete renowned for his longevity, Janvrin was not only an Olympian in 2000, but he also won the 1995 Pan American Games and the 2001 USA Outdoor Championships. Janvrin competed in eight Thorpe Cup competitions, including the first in 1993. He was champion in 2000 and 1996 with a score of 8462. In 2012, he was named head coach for the U.S. team at the NACAC Under-23 Championships. Janvrin is currently in his 22nd season as co-head coach at the University of Central Missouri, specializing in coaching the sprints, hurdles, and multi-events. He has helped coach the team to multiple national titles, including the first women’s national championship for the school. In addition, Janvrin has coached 24 national champion athletes who have secured 43 national titles during his time at the University of Central Missouri.


Chris Richardson, Women’s Head Coach: Richardson, a former All-American decathlete, is currently the director of track and field and cross country at Cerritos College, where he has led Cerritos College Women to four State Team Titles in the last five years. Previously, he held the same position at El Camino Compton Center. Richardson has also filled the assistant coach position at the University of Central Arkansas and the head coach position at Moorpark College. Richardson has been on the Team USATF coaching staff for the Capital Cup, NACAC Under-23 Championships, the Pan American Junior Championships, the Thorpe Cup USA vs. Germany, and the Combined Cup. He has personally coached 20 State Champions and 32 All Americans. In addition, Richardson began teaching USATF coaches education in 2011 and he is certified under IAAF as a combined events coach.
