TORUN, Poland – Non-Stadia Athletes competed in Cross Country, and two road races, a 10 Km and a Half Marathon, at the WMA Indoor Championships. The last day of the event saw US Athletes winning four Gold Medals and a Team Bronze. Over 500 of the fleetest Masters Half Marathoners in the World toed the line at 10 AM on Saturday. Dawn Grunnagle led the women’s field from the gun and was the first to cross the line, pocketing the 40-44 Gold Medal in 1:16:25. That paired well with the Gold she earned earlier in the week in the 10K road race. Fiona Bayly, overall winner of the Women’s race at our 15 Km National Masters Championship, took Gold in the 50-54 competition in 1:23:44. And the incomparable Heide Moebius added the Women’s 80-84 Gold Half Marathon medal to the those she earned earlier in the week in the 6 Km Cross Country event and the 10 Km Road Race. On the Men’s side, Roger Sayre claimed Gold in the 60-64 division in 1:17:49 and teamed up with Francis Burdett and Dale Flanders to take Bronze in the Men’s 50 and up team competition. Sayre’s Gold went with the Bronze he earned for Cross Country on Monday. Tami Graf (W80 bronze)) and Greg Mitchell (10 Km silver) earned medals in the cross country and 10 Km events, respectively, earlier in the week. Non-Stadia Team Manager, Mary Rosado, summed it up, saying, “It was a great day for Team USATF on the World Stage. And the Gold Medal athletes enjoyed a $400 payday, courtesy of a USATF Masters Rewards Program initiated this year.” The next chance for Non-Stadia competitors at a World Masters Athletics Championship will be when the Outdoor Championships are in Toronto, Canada in July 2020.
