Team USA wins 70 golds and 168 medals at WMA Championships in Perth

PERTH, AUSTRALIA — Team USA won 74 gold and 181 medals overall at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth, Australia over two weeks, which concluded Sunday. Team USA had the most proportional medals of any team and was second of the 92 teams only to home Australia. Following USA in both golds and totals were Britain, Germany, France, Finland, and Japan. Team USA had 243 competitors among over 4000 athletes.

USA Master Chair Gary Snyder said, “Great meet. Amazing facilities, top quality. Well organized by WMA and Perth.”

WORLD RECORDS by American athletes at the meet: Irene Obera W80 in the heptathlon and short hurdles; Kathy Bergen W75 ties WR high jump; Kathy Martin W65 in the 5000m and 2000m Steeplechase among four golds and two silvers, including also beating the prior 800 WR in second to Sabra Harvey, who set WR in the race. A world mark was set in the W80 4X400 relay by Mary Horada, Christel Donley, Jeannie Daprano, and Obera. Also of note in the relays: USA Masters Vice Chair Robert Thomas ran on two USA team gold medal-winning M50 relays (4x100, 4x400) after winning individual silvers in the 200 and 400M.

MTF Scholarship winners for the meet Sabra Harvey and Don McGee won two golds each (and Harvey set World record in W65 800M), plus other individual and relay medals.  MTF Chair Gary Snyder and team stadia Manager Phil Greenwald selected the two recipients based on need and medal potential and clearly picked well.

In addition to Snyder as head of the USA Delegation, the USA’s Rex Harvey and Carroll Deweese were cited in the opening pages of the meet program as top WMA International Judges and Technical Officials, and they assisted throughout the championship. Phil Greenwald and Mary Rosado were Team Managers.

The USA Masters Awards Committee selected Irene Obera (six individual golds and two WR, eight individual medals) and Bill Collins (two golds, including wind-aided world’s best 100 and relay medal), as the outstanding USA male and female performers through the meet for consideration by WMA as outstanding male and female athlete.
