PUNTA UMBRIA, Spain--In preparation for Sunday's IAAF World Cross Country Championships, members of Team USA selected its captains during its first team meeting Thursday.
2008 Olympic Women's Marathon team member Magdalena Lewy Boulet (Oakland, California), was selected as the senior women's captain by her peers for the second straight year.
"It's always an honor to be the team captain again. We have a very strong team, with three women (Shalane Flanagan, Molly Huddle & Lewy-Boulet) back from last year's team. We are excited to be back and try to win another medal or possibly upgrade."
Reigning USA Cross Country Champion Brent Vaughn (Black Hawk, Colorado) was selected as the senior men's captain in making his first appearance in a USA uniform.
"I'm very excited, considering that this is the first national team I've been on," Vaughn said.
University of Washington freshman Katie Flood (Des Moines, Iowa), the third place finisher in the USA junior 6 km championships last month in a time of 21:43 was picked by the squad as the junior women's captain.
"I'm honored to be the team captain, and help lead this group of young women," said Flood.
Stanford University freshman Erik Olson (Novato, California), who won the USA junior men's 8 km title last month in San Diego in 24:48, got the nod from his teammates as junior men's team captain.
"It's a privilege to be in a leadership position. I'm honored to get picked by my teammates," Olson said.
