Team USA’s senior women take home bronze at Pan American Race Walking Cup

ARICA, Chile -- The senior women of Team USA, led by Olympian Maria Michta-Coffey, turned in a podium finish at the Pan American Race Walking Cup in Arica, Chile this weekend. Michta-Coffey finished fifth overall in women’s 20 km, as the U.S. senior women took home the bronze with 35 points.


Michta-Coffey (Farmingville, New York) crossed in 1:34:06 with compatriot Miranda Melville (Rush, New York) close behind in eighth with a time of 1:35:50. Rounding out team scoring for the U.S. women was Katie Burnett (Bellevue, Washington), who turned in a time of 1:45:24 for 22nd place.


The U.S. junior women’s and men’s teams each finished sixth in the team race, led by Anali Cisneros (Elgin, Illinois) on the women’s side and Anthony Peters (Bartlett, Illinois) in the men’s competition. Cisneros led an American charge that saw three athletes finish in the top 15, as Cisneros finished 12th in 52:26, just ahead of 14th-place finisher Katie Newhoff (Islip Terrace, New York) in 53:22 and Katie Michta (Nesconset, New York) in 53:36 for 15th.


For the junior men, twin brothers Anthony and Alex Peters turned in top-25 finishes with Anthony crossing 14th in 48:14 and Alex finishing in 55:22 for 21st. They bookmarked compatriot Cameron Haught (Enon, Ohio), who finished just behind Anthony in 15th with a time of 48:37.


For the first time in the history of the Pan American Race Walking Cup, two women contested the 50 km distance. Erin Taylor-Talcott (Owego, New York) completed the distance in 4:50:26, six minutes ahead of compatriot Susan Randall (Beavercreek, Ohio), who clocked 4:56:42.


The senior men finished seventh in the team standings of the 20 km competition, with Olympian John Nunn (Bonsall, California) leading the way with his sub-1:30 finish of 1:29:33, good for 23rd overall. Alex Chavez (Pharr, Texas) was 25th in 1:32:37, while Nick Christie (San Diego, California) rounded out the scoring for Team USA in 27th with his time of 1:35:04. In the men’s 50 km, Michael Mannozzi (Youngstown, Ohio) was the top American in 4:46:07 for 17th place.
