Tatyana McFadden named USATF Athlete of the Week

11/7/2013

INDIANAPOLIS - University of Illinois senior Tatyana McFadden has been named USATF Athlete of the Week winning the pushrim wheelchair division at the New York City Marathon.

In the five-borough race, McFadden (Clarksville, Md.) crossed the line in 1:59:13, three-and-a-half minutes ahead of runner-up Wakako Tsuchida of Japan. McFadden’s New York City Marathon victory has capped an incredible year. The 24-year-old has completed the Grand Slam of marathons winning Boston, London, Chicago and last week, New York City.

Adopted at age 6, she was born with spina bifida in St. Petersburg, Russia.  “I love sports and I love competing,” said McFadden in an NBC News interview before the race.  “Any tough day that I have now, I have to think, ‘I’ve been through tougher.’  This is going to be a breeze.”

McFadden now turns her focus to the Nordic Skiing World Cup where she’ll hone her skills on the snow with her sights squarely focused on the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
