So Cal Roadrunners, Toliver highlight day 2 of USA Youth Outdoor Championships
6/27/2012
ARLINGTON, Texas-- A near record breaking performance by the So Cal Roadrunners in the Youth Boys 4x800m relay and a dominating performance by Travis Toliver in the Intermediate Boys decathlon highlighted day two at the USA Youth Track & Field Championships at Maverick stadium at The University of Texas-Arlington.
32 teams competed in the 4x800m relay but it was the So Cal Roadrunners 4x800m team that turned up the heat on the track, trying to break the national record in the Youth Boys division. The team comprised of Xolan Brown, Andrew Wilson, Alexis Gonzalez and Phillip Rocha won by more than 45 seconds but were shy of the record. Their time of 8:31.95 finished seven seconds behind the 8:24.03 record.
“I was kind of disappointed because we didn’t get the record,” Rocha, the anchor leg, said. “These aren’t the best conditions but we still had a good chance. It was great though, I had my team pull through, we PRed and did our best.”
It was a neck-and-neck competition to see which club could come away with the most relay victories between Track Houston Youth Track Club and Jenks America Track Club. In the Intermediate Boys 4x800m relay less than one second separated the clubs from first and second but it was Track Houston’s ‘A’ squad that brought home the win. The team made up of Malik Wilson, Derick Williams,Kendall Brown and Zahir Nobles finished in 8:23.76 over Jenks America’s 8:24.64. Both clubs came away with three victories in the 4x800m relays and will continue to battle in the other relays the remainder of the meet.
“It was fun. It was a competition,” Zahir Nobles, the anchor leg, said. “I just wanted to get out so he wouldn’t catch me at the end.”
Travis Toliver (Northwest Flyers Track Club) helped close out the day in style with a dominating performance in the Intermediate Boys Decathlon. With personal bests in three of the ten events, Toliver won the competition by more than 1,000 points, winning every event after the first. Even as he continued to gap his competitors Toliver kept pushing ahead to widen the lead.
“Really overall performance was great,” Toliver said. “It’s never about the competition, it’s always about a PR and beating yourself.
