Sisson’s 5K title earns her USATF Athlete of the Week


Emily Sisson (Providence, Rhode Island) ran away with the USATF 5K Championships title to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Sisson, who was ninth in the 10,000m at the 2017 World Championships, led from the start of the Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K at New York City, steadily moving away from her challengers through the second and third miles on the way to a 15:38 clocking that put her 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up. It was her first USATF Running Circuit victory of the year.

Other notable performances from the weekend:

Paul Chelimo—Chelimo outleaned Shadrack Kipchirchir in a course-record 13:45 to win the USATF men’s 5K Championship.

Shalane Flanagan — Flanagan made it to the podium for the second year in a row at the New York City Marathon, placing third in 2:26:22, 31 seconds faster than her 2017 winning time.

Bernard Lagat — Lagat was the top American masters finisher at the NYC Marathon in his debut at the distance, clocking 2:17:20 to take 18th overall.

Roberta Groner — Groner was the top women’s masters finisher at the NYC Marathon, placing 12th overall in 2:31:01.

Laurie Knowles — Knowles, 41, was the women’s winner at the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon in 2:37:50.

Anthony Costales — Costales won the men’s USATF Marathon Trail Championships in Moab, Utah, by 22 seconds with a 2:59:18.

Rachel Drake — Drake won the women’s USATF Marathon Trail Championships by more than seven minutes in 3:36:11.
