Shore AC’s Taylor-Talcott named to men’s 50K World Race Walk Team Championships

4/13/2016

INDIANAPOLIS -- USATF’s men’s and women’s Race Walk Executive Committee has named Erin Taylor-Talcott to the men’s 50 km race walk roster set to compete at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships, USATF announced today.

Taylor-Talcott (Owego, New York) of Shore AC will be included as a member of Team USA's men's 50K team that will compete May 7-8 in Rome, Italy. USATF’s ability to enter her (as may other Federations for their athletes) in the Men’s 50km RW at the 2016 IAAF World Race Walk Team Championships was made possible by IAAF Council action this past week in permitting women to compete in this men’s race. Over the past two years, USATF had lobbied the IAAF to establish a women’s 50km race walk in IAAF Championships moving forward.

In 2012, she became the first woman to walk 50K at a U.S. Olympic Team Trials (4:33:23), and she set the world record of 5:03:34 on Nov. 22, 2015, after the IAAF’s Nov. 1 rule change made women’s 50K marks eligible.

“Hearing that I’ve been named to the 50k team is absolutely incredible,” said Taylor-Talcott, the longtime women’s 50K advocate. “This has to be one of the absolute highlights of my life. I have been working towards this and dreaming towards this for so long, and I heard so many people tell me this would never happen. To know that it’s really happening is unbelievable.”

The men’s and women’s race walk executive committee met Tuesday evening and made the unprecedented decision.

“So many people believed in me and so many didn’t,” Taylor-Talcott stated. “Just the validation of President Sebastian Coe, and the women’s committee and all of those people believing that women can do this. I can’t wait to go and race the best that I can. I am going to go and enjoy this experience and show those other women out there that they can do it too, and have fun.”

Founded in 1934, Shore AC touts 25 Olympians on its website, including 1999 IAAF World Championships 50km race walk bronze medalist Curt Clausen.

The remainder of the men’s 50K and 20K, as well as the women’s 20K rosters will be announced later this week.
