Shelby Houlihan doubles up at USATF Outdoors to win USATF Athlete of the Week


Rio Olympian Shelby Houlihan (Sioux City, Iowa) earns USATF Athlete of the Week honors after becoming the second female since 2003 to win both the 1,500m and 5,000m at a USATF Outdoor Championships.


Houlihan grabbed her second and third national titles at the 2018 USATF Outdoor Championships in the Michelob ULTRA women’s 1,500m and Michelob ULTRA women’s 5,000m. She earned the 1,500m title with a time of 4:05.48 and the very next day returned for the 5,000m. Houlihan moved up to the lead with two laps remaining, sprinted the final 100m to take the national title with a time of 15:31.03.


Other notable performances from the weekend:


DeAnna Price (Moscow Mills, Missouri) claimed her first USATF national title in the hammer throw with a toss of 78.12m/256-3, reclaiming the American record and world lead while besting the field by more than five meters in the process. Price had a consistently strong showing at the USATF Outdoor Championships with all three of her final throws over 76 meters.


Noah Lyles (Clermont, Florida) won the 100m dash at the USATF Outdoor Championships. Lyles tied the Drake Stadium record and world lead with a 9.89 in semi-finals. He went on to clock a 9.88 later in finals to break the stadium record and establish a lone world lead. The 20-year-old is the youngest sprinter in 34 years to earn the 100m national title.


Evan Jager (Algonquin, Illinois) captured his seventh USATF title in the 3,000m steeplechase. Jager battled for the lead and ran a time of 8:20.10 immediately following a weather delay at the USATF Outdoor Championships to better his own facility record.


Joseph Gray (Colorado Springs, Colorado) finished third in the World Mountain Running Long Distance Championship in Karpacz, Poland. Gray covered the 36k course with a time of 2:41:02 to lead Team USA to a second place finish.


Maggie Ewen (St. Francis, Minnesota) won the women’s shot put at the USATF Outdoor Championships. Fresh off of an NCAA Championship win, Ewen threw 19.29m/63-3.5 late in competition to snag the win. The collegiate shot put record holder also finished second in women’s discus at the USATF Outdoor Championships with a throw of 61.13m/200-6.


Maria Michta-Coffey (Stony Brook, New York) lapped the field to win the 20k race walk at the USATF Outdoor Championships with a time of 1:35.59. Michta-Coffey broke the facility record by more than two minutes en route to her 42nd USATF national title.


Joslin Blair (Eagle, Colorado) captured a first place finish at the WMRA Mountain Running International Youth Cup in Gagliano del Capo, Italy. The 17-year-old bested a field of 46 girls, running the 4.3k course in 23:50. Blair won the first U.S. medal in history in this event and propelled Team USA to a third place finish.

Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
