Ryan Vail earns USATF Athlete of the Week after top ten Berlin Marathon performance


Ryan Vail (Portland, Oregon) was the top American finisher at the Berlin Marathon Sunday to earn his first USATF Athlete of the Week award.


Vail, 31, moved up seven places over the final 10K of the prestigious race to get in the top 10, crossing the line in eighth in 2:12:40. The five-time Team USATF member for World Cross Country enjoyed his best finish ever in a major marathon, after placing ninth at New York and 10th at London in 2014.

Other notable performances:

  • Megan Roche — Roche was the top U.S. female finisher at the NACAC Mountain Running Championships in Golden, British Columbia, covering the 10K course in 41:39.3 to take silver.

  • Mike Popejoy — Also a silver medalist at the NACAC Mountain Running Championships, Popejoy finished less than three seconds out of gold medal position in 35:21.3. He was 3.1 seconds ahead of teammate and bronze medalist Josh Eberly.

  • Jerrell Mock — In becoming only the third man in NCAA Division I history to win consecutive titles at Minnesota’s Roy Griak Invitational, Colorado State’s Mock dominated the individual race with an 11-second margin of victory. He also led the Rams to the team title.

  • Elinor Purrier — Coming off her best season on the track, New Hampshire’s Purrier won her second straight Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown by 14 seconds, clocking 16:48.6 at Boston’s Franklin Park.
