Ryan Crouser’s record-breaking throw lands him USATF Athlete of the Week

Ryan Crouser (Boring, Oregon) broke his former shot put record at the Nike Prefontaine Classic to win USATF athlete of the week.

The Rio gold medalist highlighted a historic competition as four men threw beyond 21.60m/70-10.50 in one competition for the first time in history, indoors or out. Crouser launched a massive 22.53m/73-11 put in the fifth round to add 10 centimeters to his Hayward Field record and land seventh on the list of best U.S. throws. Crouser led the highly-competitive field from the start and fouled on his third attempt. He steadily improved before unleashing the massive meet record and season best 22.53/73-11.

Other notable performances from the weekend:

Shelby Houlihan: In her first race of the outdoor season, Houlihan won the 1500m after having a strong finish down the final straightaway. She finished with a time 3:59.06. That was her first sub-4 performance, and four seconds ahead of her previous best.

Noah Lyles: Won the 200m at the Nike Prefontaine Classic with a time of 19.69. That time is the best in the world this year as well as a personal best. He remains undefeated in Diamond League competition.

Jaylen Bacon: Ran a wind-legal 9.97 in the 100m at the NCAA West Regional, which ties the fastest time in the world this year.
