Richardson’s sub-11 sprint wins her USATF Athlete of the Week


Sha’Carri Richardson (Dallas, Texas) became only the third U20 American woman to break 11 seconds in the 100m to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Richardson, a freshman at Louisiana State University, won her 100m quarterfinal of the NCAA East prelims in 10.99, joining Candace Hill and Twanisha Terry as the only American women ever to crack the 11-second barrier as under-20 athletes. Only six women in the world have achieved the feat. Richardson also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200m with a 22.74 to win her quarterfinal section, and she helped the LSU 4x100m relay to a 43.29 to win section two and advance to the finals in Austin next week.

Angie Annelus — Annelus ran a U.S.-leading 22.36 in the 200m at the NCAA West prelims, the second-fastest time in the world this year.

Kendell Williams — Williams was the top American woman in the heptathlon at Götzis, scoring a U.S.-leading 6,412 points to place fifth.

Christian Taylor — Taylor won the triple jump at the Nanjing IAAF World Challenge meet with a season-best 17.47m/57-3.75.

Kara Winger — The American record-holder, Winger won the women’s javelin at Bergen, Norway, with a U.S.-leading 60.80m/199-6.

Devin Roberson — At the Missouri state meet, which was moved due to storm damage, Roberson moved to equal-7th on the all-time boys high school discus list with his 218-4 throw.

Now in its 18th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
