Reese, Thurmond move up at USATF

10/6/2015

INDIANAPOLIS -- Sara Reese and Aretha Thurmond have taken on new roles in the organization, USATF CEO Max Siegel announced Tuesday.

Reese has been promoted to USATF Managing Director of Finance, while Thurmond assumes the role of Director of International & Championships Teams.

Reese came to USATF as Director of Finance in February of 2014 after spending 12 years as Finance Manager at the Johnson County Public Library in Franklin, Indiana. With a strong background in policy and procedure, Reese has led the expansion of USATF’s finance department to provide enhanced responsiveness to USATF stakeholders. Included in the changes implemented under her oversight are a revamped, more efficient budget process, travel and financial procedures that standardize and expedite processing, and instituting financial forecasting models for USATF revenues, expenditures and investment growth.

While at the Johnson County Public Library, she wrote and implemented new travel policy, investment policy and cash reconciliation procedures that complied with IRS regulations and Indiana state law. Her experience also includes work as an internal auditor at the American United Life Insurance Company and as a senior auditor at Katz, Sapper & Miller LLC in Indianapolis.

Reese was certified as a CPA in 1992 and graduated magna cum laude from Manchester College with a perfect 4.0 in accounting.

Thurmond began her administrative career at USATF as Associate Director of International Teams, assisting with the management of Team USA at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships and Pan American Games, as well as multiple national teams spanning every event group.

A four-time Olympian in the discus with vast international teams experience, Thurmond served as Team USA captain for 2008 and 2012 Olympic Track & Field Teams and the 2009 and 2011 World Outdoor Championships. She earned a spot on her first Olympic team as just a sophomore at the University of Washington and made five World Championship teams in her career. She held the U.S. No. 1 ranking from 2004-2006 and was among the top five in the U.S. throughout most of her career, finishing ranked third in the U.S. when she retired in 2013.

Thurmond recently was recognized as one of the 2015 Class of Future Industry Leader Scholars. The award recognizes emerging leaders under the age of 40 with aspirations to attain executive level responsibilities in the sports and fitness industry, affording her the opportunity to attend the Sports & Fitness Industry Association Summit in New Orleans, Louisiana.

A four-time U.S. champion, two-time Pan American Games gold medalist and former USATF board member, Thurmond is a graduate of the University of Washington.
