Records Expected to Fall at 2016 USATF Masters 5K Road Champs

9/28/2016

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK -- Each October, the speediest Masters athletes in the country converge on the Syracuse Festival of Races to contest the USATF Masters 5K Road Championships. Among those runners this year are four who stand an excellent chance of cracking the U.S. 5K record for their respective age groups.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, Tom Bernhard has been tearing up the roads for the last two years. He is prepped to better the Men’s 65-69 record of 18:12. Bernhard ran this course in 17:36 last year in the M60-64 age group.

Libby James, from Fort Collins, Colorado, takes aim at the Women’s 80-84 record of 29:23, which has stood for 27 years. The current holder of the W75-79 mark, she has run two 5K races this summer under 25:30, so James is on track to demolish the previous record. Long island’s Kathryn Martin, the reigning Masters Road Runner of the Year and holder of the W60-64 mark, shoots for the 20:27 set two years ago on this same course.

2012 and 2013 Masters Runner of the Year and current co-holder of the M55-59 record, Brian Pilcher is primed to take down the Men’s 60-64 record of 16:58. Another Bay Area runner, Pilcher ran a 16:52 just before his 60th birthday.

Kevin Castille, the renowned runner from Lafayette, Louisiana and recent Olympic Marathon Trials competitor, is expected to lead the Masters runners around the course. Four years ago he won this race in 14:25. Last year he took 5K Masters races in 14:18 and 14:42 and took home the 2016 Masters crown at the Peachtree 10K in 31:17.

On the women’s side, defending overall champion, Marisa Sutera Strange, will try to make it two in a row at age 53. Individual Age Group Grand Prix leaders, Dianne Anderson, Rob Arsenault, Jon Desenberg. William ‘Hugh’ Enicks, John Gardiner, Ron Mastin, Jill Miller-Robinett, Peter Mullin, Gary Patton, Jo Anne Rowland and Marisa Sutera Strange will seek to gap their closest rivals.
