Race walking, multi events highlight Day One at USATF Junior Olympics

HUMBLE, Texas -- The temperatures reached into the upper 90’s, but even that couldn’t slow down the athletes at the USATF Junior Olympics at Turner Stadium on the campus of Humble High School, Monday, July 21. Race walking and the start of multi events were on tap today.
In the 13-14 girls 3,000 meter race walk, Taylor Ewert (Beavercreek, Ohio) of Miami Valley Track Club claimed her fourth straight title at Junior Olympics, walking a 16:36.32 to out pace local top seed  Emely Antuna (Pharr, Texas) and defending age group champion Kirra Facer (Murrieta, California), who finished in 17:24.22 and 17:33.11, respectively. She also won the event at USATF Youth Outdoor Championships last month in Bloomington, Indiana with a personal best 15:54.56.
Local 11 year old Camila Vicens (Houston, Texas) of Track Houston blew away the competition in the 11-12 girls 1500m race walk with a 7:00.59, nearly 66 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
In the men’s 17-18 decathlon, John Lint (Westerville, Ohio) of Flying J’s Track Club finished in the lead with 3,6 94 points after day one despite only one first-place finish, which came in the high jump, where he jumped a 1.90m/6-2.75. He had a solid overall day, finishing third in the 100m (11.15) and long jump (6.44m/21-1.5), and second in the shot put (12.90m/42-4) and 400m (50.14).
Day two of the meet continues tomorrow, Tuesday, July 22. On tap is the continuation of the multi events and race walking, with the opening ceremonies tomorrow at 7:30 pm CST.
