Press Conference Quotes - Nike Prefontaine Classic

5/27/2016

Sanya Richards-Ross, Olympic gold medalist in 400m
On running a 51 in practice
“I didn’t want anyone to know about my 51 in practice, but that was a really good confidence builder. I’ve never run that fast in practice. But of course, I was lacking races, so coach wanted me to get out and back to racing so that (tomorrow) wouldn’t be my first-first race.”

On competing at the Nike Prefontaine Classic
“It means the world to me. I was visiting with the highschool kids yesterday, and I was actually talking to my husband and saying, ‘Man it’s been such an amazing journey and the Prefontaine has been such a huge part of that.’ Coming here as a high schooler really opened my eyes up to the possibilities and the potential that I had if I could stay focussed. It means a lot for me to come back here and for this to be my first race of the season. The fans here are just unbelievable and they support us. It’s really special to be back here.”

Aries Merritt, Olympic gold medalist in 110mH
“Things are coming along great, and my training is going well, and I’m looking forward tomorrow to running a season’s best. That’s my only priority - to get better and better and better.”

Christian Taylor, Olympic gold medalist in Triple Jump
“With the Olympic Trials coming up, this is going to be a stepping stone in that direction. This is going to be a chance for myself personally to see what the competition is going to be like and the people I’m going to have to compete against to get a chance to get on that team. But tomorrow, I am going to challenge all the guys to rise to the occasion. People are paying to come out here to see a good show, and that’s what we need to give them. I don’t like to give all the hype and get everything stirred up if nothing comes behind it.”

Vashti Cunningham, World Indoor Champion in High Jump
It’s really just a learning experience for me right now because I am so young, so I’ve been taking in a lot. Just from being up (on the stage) with the (athletes) who were there, I kind of just see how they respond to everything and take little things from them. I’m really enjoying the experience so far, and it’s treating me well. I look forward to just another opportunity to PR and hopefully to win.”

Justin Gatlin, Olympic gold medalist and double world champ gold medalist
“I’ve got to protect my house. This is my house. I’ve got to come out here and put on a good show. I love coming here to Hayward Field. Obviously I’m not from Oregon, but to be able to step out on this track, I always feel like I’m at home.”

Note: There has been an evening schedule change. The Men’s 10,000 meters will now be the last event following the women's 5,0000m.
