Quick Questions with Molly Huddle

Molly Huddle (Elmira, N.Y.) enters the .US National Road Racing Championships tied for 16th in the women’s USARC standings. During the series, she captured the 5k Road Championships for the second straight year and third time of her career.

USATF: What does it mean to you that USATF is partnering the .US National Road Racing Championships?

HUDDLE: I think it’s a really exciting addition to USARC. From a participant standpoint, it puts another race in the community. For the runners, it puts another event out there and it’s a distance that blends us all together. Also, the extra points make the race a lot more exciting.

USATF: What will this experience be like to run alongside the everyday runner?

HUDDLE: That’s always my favorite part of (races like) the Rock ‘n’ Roll atmosphere. You all have your own goals and there is such a spectrum of people running the race. It kind of makes it more of a festival atmosphere and you don’t take it so seriously. Even if you want to run a personal best, it puts everything into perspective and I usually get the best out of it. Plus you get to socialize with people that you normally wouldn’t, and I really like it.

USATF: Describe your training regimen in preparation for this race.

HUDDLE: That’s pretty exciting at this point in my career, to have something that’s new for me. I tend to stick with the same schedule so at this point the road races are repeats. It’s kind of cool that we’re all doing this road race and hopefully it’s all on everyone’s calendar. It’s a level playing field because we haven’t seen this course before. We’ll all show up and do the course for the first time. That will be a fun challenge.

USATF: What do you think about running through Old Town Alexandria, which is such a historic city?

HUDDLE: What better race for a US Road Championship than a place that is so relevant to America’s history? I certainly haven’t had a chance to go to D.C. and see it the way I would like to. It’s a great race and great draw.

USATF: Will your strategy to kick near the end be the same? Will your pace be similar?

HUDDLE: I think the competition is going to be so close and so good that whoever wins it will come down to a sprint finish. I know with Shalane (Flanagan) and Emily (Infeld), this distance is in their wheelhouse. If I’m going to be in, I know I’m going to have to be kicking.

USATF: You paint your nails the night before each race. Any specific colors this weekend of particular significance?

HUDDLE: I haven’t really thought about the color yet. I usually wait until the night before and bring a few options with me. There is some likelihood for a red, white and blue combo, so we’ll leave it up to a race-day surprise.
