Press Conference Quotes - USA vs. The World at Penn Relays

4/29/2016

Sanya Richards-Ross
On competing at Penn Relays to begin her final professional season

“I actually love to start the season at Penn Relays and to be able to start my season as scheduled for the first time in the last couple years is very exciting for me. We have a great team, and to get to compete with Natasha (Hastings), and DeeDee (Trotter) and Phyllis Francis tomorrow will be amazing. This will probably be my last year competing, and I’m looking forward to leaving it all on the track and having a great run.

Mike Rodgers
On the comfort of working with Justin Gatlin for so long and competing at Penn Relays

“Me and Justin have been doing handoffs together at Penn Relays for the last four years, and it’s just the chemistry that me and him have. When I give him the stick, I know it’s in good hands and that he’s going to lead us in the right direction for victory. I love competing here. Penn Relays is at the beginning of my schedule. I love to be here for the crowd and the atmosphere and to come across that line with a W.”

Natasha Hastings
On an American recording-setting start to 2016 and what that means going forward

“The year has been going well. I didn’t expect to start that fast, having made a couple of additions to my training. I was expecting to progress maybe a little bit slower, but I’m excited with how things are going. I’m especially excited to be back in Philly and back at Penn Relays. I’ve run here all but one year since 2000, so this is almost like a second homecoming for me. I love running here, and I’m just excited to see how things go and in my preparation towards the ‘Road to Rio.’”

Patrick Feeney
On his memorable finish on his first U.S. team at 2015 Penn Relays and how things have

“Last year was my first time ever wearing the U.S. uniform, so I was very excited especially since it was my first time running at Penn Relays as well. With USATF having the confidence in me to anchor the relay in my first time ever wearing the uniform was very big for me. I was very nervous, but I knew I could feed off of that. The energy from the crowd made it so much easier to bring home first place in the 4x4 last year. I’m so excited that I got chosen to come back this year. It’s always an honor to wear the U.S. uniform, and I’m glad I’ve been able to do it at Indoor Worlds this year and then also coming back here.”

Carmelita Jeter

On representing Team USA and competing at Penn Relays

“It’s always exciting to represent the U.S. and come to Penn. To me, Penn is really where I really get that energy going for the season because it’s all the countries and different teams, and you get your team camaraderie and everything is gelling. This is pretty much where outdoor season starts for me. I’ve been training really well, and I’m just excited to get back to running well and doing the things that I do. I’m definitely excited to be here with my team, and I just can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Justin Gatlin
On running 9.90 to start season after recovering from injury

“I had an ankle injury in November, where I severely rolled my ankle and it’s been a really tough Fall training season for me. Mentally getting myself ready but also physically, it’s been a challenge for me as well. Me also being the veteran, especially within my training group, it was kind of tough for me to be in the back training while everyone was running past me. To be able to come out and run 9.90 the first race out, being here at Penn is really going to help me get ready for the next races.

“This is my 13th Penn Relays in my whole track career, so it’s a tradition for me. I love coming to Penn. All the way through college and professionally, it’s always a prelude to going into a championship year. You get to build morale with teammates; you get excited; you get to put the uniform on; you get to run a relay with all your friends, so it’s not as stressful as an individual race. It’s almost like an all-star game or like a pro bowl. This is always filled with excitement and having fun, so it’s something I don’t want to miss each year.”
