INDIANAPOLIS - The storied Penn Relays will play host to the 14th edition of USA vs. The World on Saturday, April 27 to kick off the 2013 Outdoor USATF Championship Series.
Team USA swept the 2012 USA vs. The World relays for the first time in history and will be looking to defend their dominance against a stellar international field. More than 15 countries will compete with relays contested in the 4x100, 4x400, women’s 4x800m and men’s DMR.
The relays are the perfect start to the USATF Championship Series that also includes the adidas Grand Prix (May 25), Nike Prefontaine Classic (June 1) and the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (June 19-23).
USA vs. the World will be broadcast live on NBC on Saturday, April 27 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. ET. An additional two hours of coverage will be shown the same day on Universal Sports from 3:00-5:00 p.m. ET.
This year’s outdoor series will feature 16 hours of live television coverage, with more than 18 hours in total being broadcast.
World Record Rendezvous
Before they shattered the record books in London, the foursome of Tianna
(nee’ Madison) Bartoletta
, Allyson Felix
, Bianca Knight
and Carmelita Jeter
ran to the win at the 2012 edition of USA vs. the World. With a world record to added to their accomplishments, all four women will return to Franklin Field as the U.S. looks to defend their title.
Back from the Breaking Point
Determination willed Manteo Mitchell
to finish his leg of the mens’ 4x400m prelim in London in spite of breaking his leg mid lap. That same determination carried Mitchell through the recovery and rehabilitation process to bring him back to the track. When Mitchell receives the baton on Team USA’s 4x400m squad, it will be his first relay since that fateful day in London.
Team USA will have to put up a tough fight with a list of international all-stars and Olympic medalists descending on Franklin Field. World and Olympic Champion Kirani James
will headline the Caribbean All-Stars 4x400m alongside two-time Olympic Champion Felix Sanchez
of the Dominican Republic. On the women’s side, two-time Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
will lead the Jamaican contingent in the fierce USA vs. Jamaica rivalry.
