Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson to participate in the .US National 12K

ALEXANDRIA -- Olympic champion Joan Benoit Samuelson, winner of the first Olympic women’s marathon, will be part of the festivities at the 2014 .US National 12K in Alexandria, Virginia on Sunday, Nov. 16.

 

Benoit Samuelson will compete in the Masters 12K and will be available for autographs at the Neustar tent in the Fan Festival area at 10:15 a.m.

 

Benoit Samuelson is a pioneer in the world of women’s athletics, capturing gold in the first Olympic women’s marathon with a time of 2:24:52. Benoit Samuelson is a two-time Boston Marathon champion and set an American record (2:21:21) in her 1985 Chicago Marathon victory, a record that stood until 2003.

 

Competitor Magazine recently named Benoit Samuelson the greatest American female marathoner of all-time. She still holds the fastest times by an American woman at the Chicago Marathon and Olympic Games.

 

The culminating event of the USA Running Circuit and USATF’s flagship road race, the .US National 12K will be held Nov. 16 and offer an opportunity for everyone to test their limits and enjoy a scenic run through Alexandria and on the George Washington Parkway. The event features community 12 km and 1 Mile races, a ½ mile Kids’ Fun Run, as well as the .US National 12K elite race offering $100,000 in prize money, the USATF Masters Championships for over-40 runners and the USATF Club Championships for registered USATF clubs.
