Olympic gold medalist Clay, two-time defending champion Wade headline Team USA at Thorpe Cup

2008 Olympic decathlon gold medalist Bryan Clay and two-time Thorpe Cup heptathlon champion Bettie Wade will be among the deep men’s and women’s squads for the upcoming Thorpe Cup. The 19th edition of the decathlon and seventh edition of the heptathlon, the Thorpe Cup will take place Saturday and Sunday in Marburg, Germany.

The Thorpe Cup is an annual multi-event competition pitting members of Team USA against Germany. Team scoring for the event is determined by the top five men’s and top three women’s scores being added together to reach a winner.

On the Team USA roster, Clay will join four men that finished in the top ten in the decathlon at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field and Wade is part of six women who placed in the top six at the Trials in the heptathlon.

Along with Clay, the reigning Olympic champion and 2004 Olympic silver medalist, the men’s decathlon Team USA roster also features Gray Horn and Joe Detmer, who placed third and fourth, respectively, at the Olympic Trials. Horn placed third with a personal best score of 7,954, but did not have the standard to qualify for the Olympic Games. Also on the men’s roster is Ryan Harlan, who placed sixth at the Olympic Trials and Isaac Murphy, who finished 10th.

Along with winning Thorpe Cup titles in 2010 and 2011, Wade placed fourth at the Olympic Trials and joins Trials fifth place finisher Barbara Nwaba on the Thorpe Cup roster. Additionally, Ryann Krais (7th), Lindsey Lettow (8th), Heather Miller (9th) and Aisha Adams (10th) all also picked up top ten finishes at the Olympic Trials.

Overall Team USA holds a 13-5 advantage in the past 18 Thorpe Cup decathlon competitions, but Germany has claimed victory each of the past two years. The heptathlon series remains tied at three apiece with Team USA winning the past two years. The 2011 edition of the Thorpe Cup was held as the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

The competition comes on the heels of historical American performances in the decathlon this season. Ashton Eaton established the world record of 9,039 in winning the event at the Olympic Trials while Gunnar Nixon recently set the American junior record of 8,018 and won the first ever decathlon gold medal at the World Junior Championships for Team USA.
